Seven of 9 | I am a new manager, just out of Uni, how do I discipline an older subordinate? |
I have been the manager here for a few weeks. I have a degree in this but no real life experience. The woman I am working with is about 10 years older than me and has been doing the job for about 5 years.
There are just the 2 of us in this office and the main branches are in different countries.
She now takes extra long lunch breaks and surfs online. I do not know how to manage this situation and stop it from escalating. I am qualifed to do the work but don't have the experience, so I guess this is the experience part! Any advice please?
Thanks for answers Additional Details To Dell. I do not 'think I am better than her'. I am very fortunate to have had opportunities that she may not have. I have a lot of skills that are needed and I have learnt certain analyitical skills. Thats the way the world is. sometimes the younger person has better skills... |

I wouldn't take kindly to being managed by someone younger, degree or not. However, you have every right to insist that she stops coming back late and surfing online. She is taking advantage of you. Sit her down and explain to her that you can see the difficulties in the age gap and fact that she has been there longer but that you have to behave as her manager and these things must stop. She may possibly find another job but she is in the wrong. |

i wouldn't really call her a 'subordinate' it sounds posh and I don't think she would like it.
Ask her to sit down with you and tell her. RESPECTFULLY. |

The fact that you call this worker a subordinate goes against you, if you talk to her like this you'll get her back up, just treat her with respect, she is probably annoyed that she didn't get your job and is testing the boundaries, tell her that her behaviour is not acceptable and leave it at that , if she continues then you are probably not cut out for management. Also look into taking some management courses, they can be really helpful. |

Hi,
I am a younger manager and have found that quite a few older women don't like being managed by someone younger. although their reasons for this are usually ridiculous " you're young enough to be my daughter" etc. This has nothing to do with your skills and ability to do the job.
I would say that because there is only 2 of you in the branch, you don't want the atmosphere to be negative, although you still need to be assertive.
Perhaps say to her that you have noticed that she's taking a bit longer for lunches and that if there is something she needs extra time to do at lunch then you would prefer that she asked you first.
If you notice her on the internet then say "are you short of work, as I have ....... that needs doing" etc
Take a note of everything that has happened as this will stand you in good stead should the situation escalate. |

Forget subordination, there is no I in team!
Talk to her quietly, say you have noticed a few times she has been coming back late (don't exaggerate how many) and that she is surfing in company time. Explain that she must appreciate that this cannot be allowed to happen and ask her what she would do in your position.
You don't need to be aggressive as this will just make the situation worse.
From time to time ask her to help you or explain why things are done in a particular way, people want to be needed and appreciated.
Management is all about finding what an individual has to offer the company and then using them to benefit both themselves and the business, come easily with experience.
I mean no slight but unfortunately having just left uni you have probably never been managed so have not had the opportunity to see different styles.
Forget the books, learn to treat people as you would wish to be treated.

You could begin with a face to face, off the record, confrontation. That is a better way to treat people, in the first instance, rather than wielding the big stick. She appears to have no interest in doing a responsible job, which will inevitably affect your managerial performance and chances of progressing within the company. You have to tell her; if she does not respond, that either she works with you, as a willing contributor, or she will not have a future in the job. Managers sometimes have to make tough decisions. |

Meeeee!

Be frank with her - you can't talk down to her or try to sound like your patronising her because she wont take it - you could even in a jokey way, ask her this question...
"so, as you have more experience at this, how do you suggest I get you to stick to the rules?(lol)" She will be a bit confused & bemused & will hopefully get the message (dont expect her to actually give you an answer though - or if she does, follow it through) |
