First you should enter this fray w/ a great deal of skepticism as the banking and credit industry is designed to make most of the profit off of people who are late or overdrawn etc. Since banks are a necessary evil (see the movie; "THE CORPORATION") you should compare several banks by a list of services that you find important to you, and the fees they charge for everything (anticipate every fee you can imagine, checking, overdraft, phone customer service, etc), and ask around about what it's really like doing business with them some are worse that others, and finally give a small consideration to any community support they are involved in, i.e. do they share your values, are they progressive. Then hold your nose and keep a close eye on them at all times. |

Depending upon location and needs, investigate a local credit union for savings, as they may have special benefits and programs for first time account holders. Alternatively, Bank of America has many options for many types of accounts. They offer free checking account services for certain types of situations and are more readily available than any other banking institution in America, which means more free ATMs. |

There is no easy answer to this question because in order for you to get a really good answer we would need so much more information. With that said here are a few basic principals. One if you want a personal touch stick with a small local bank however when you do this you will most assuredly sacrifice convenience. If convenience is your biggest choice pick the largest bank for your area. If you have plenty of money go with a bank that will help you (free of charge) invest it and have good rates. All the banks are pretty much the same. Local banks work on the style of a credit union but usually work with you more on a personal level than credit unions. Unfortunately this is one of those things that you really have to figure out what is the most important thing to you and than find a bank that will fit what you want. Keep in mind that we have something the banks want which is our money so chose wisely and stick with that bank as long as you can. The longer you have an account with a bank the more likely they are to help you out as much as possible. |

is it close to home? to work? are there branches and atm's where you usually go? do you want internet banking? what are the fees and account packages like, that are available for your amount of money etc?
Don't spend too much time worrying about it. there's not a whole lot of differences in the big banks, it's a very competitive business. |

If you want to establish credit, I recommend a Credit Union. They are simple, and offer low rates. If you want a car of a house, you can get it through them and everything. |

Usually credit unions are really good. My first account was at the same credit union my parents used. Now I'm with my husband's credit union. Sometimes they are a little more friendly than just a regular bank and credit unions have lots of great services. I've always put my money in a credit union. Friends that work in both banks and credit unions tell me credit unions usually care a little more about their customers and employees.
Oh! And definitely look for a place with free checking and all so that you don't have all kinds of added fees. Both credit unions I've been with didn't charge for checking. Free is good! If you are putting your money in the bank, you probably you want to save some, not spend it at the bank! |

You need to check out all of the intrest rates and weigh out all options. I understand that the best way to go is a mutual fund. The only one that I know to tell you is the credit union their intrest rates are much lower that the banks and they have more to pffer but do you home work before you decide. |

I am 63 years old and I have found that they all have gimmicks to get your money. They will find a way to get your money and bounce your account no matter what you do. I now bank with a private bank and have had no problems with it in 8 years. |

A local bank that's not part of a mega-bank. It's the people who are important. A local Credit Union is even better. |
