Missy | I feel useless at my workplace? |
Fairly small company, I would love to do a lot for the company. But theres not enough accounts. I would Like to get paid more, I'm finding it very hard to get a decent car and my own place and I'm 25 years old. I would like to do a different line of work within the company, more in the field I graduated with.....where do I start? I'm really feeling down this holiday season. Additional Details I been at this company for 6 months. I have a BA degree from a 4 year university. |

In small companies its hard to move around in some cases because position don't usually open until a veteran coworker moves on. I suggest talking to someone higher (if you feel confrontable) about their advice on you moving more it you field to show your interest.
If you don't think that is useless, I say grab a red bull energy drink and start a side biz that stimulates all the things you learned it your field. Get clients from family, friends and family of friends and build a portfolio of work in your area of interest. A side biz would at less make you feel like you are not wasting your talents at you full-time gig. And keep the full-time job as your "just a paycheck" job.
Lastly, pick up those spirits more opportunities will come your way! |

I hear you..
I'd talk to your supervisor.. ask if you can help take on some more duties.. you can always go around and ask a co-worker who looks frazzled if they need a hand with anything |

Look for a bigger company, sounds like you have goals and if your willing to work you can probably be promoted faster. Small companys have a lot of issues that will hold you back, one..there may not be a position open to move up into, two...they often do not make enough money to pay much more. If anything I have learned that.. I moved from a small company just because of those issues, plus when I was promoted I rose to the top to fast and there was nothing else in it for me. |

lose the job, theres more to life then justa box company, lol, if i were you id think abotu the future was all the eduaction worth it to work for a small company thats going to proably be bankrupt, get out of there, its time for a change, find a proper curier, if you want a different line of work then you go for it, your only holding your self back, you most proably regret it one day if you dont. you want more money then aim high, dont stay low, a car? you want a car, no point to expensive, petrol etc get a taxi there better, get a small car instead, you only need to go from A to B. think about it is this the job you would have wanted 10 years ago, to be working in a dead end job, with not good pay wishing you could have a better life? the choice is yours and i know ill take it before the ice melts. |

Sounds like you should just explain this to your boss. Tell them you'd like a bigger role in the company and see where that gets you. |

Was in the same situation that you were in this year. I updated my resume and got me a new job, I start in January. You may want to do the same thing. |

Pick yourself up honey and get to making your goal plan.
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and trust me you won't get a thousand miles quickly even with a car...
Start applying like mad...make it a goal to have 100 applications out there within 6 months.
That was my goal 4 years ago.
I got hired making 6K more than what I was at the time by the time I got to application #27.
I have my own car and my own little guest house that I rent out... |

Take your power back. If you feel that this company is unable to offer you enough challenge, then develop a plan to find another job. OR Do the job that you want, very often we have find that we are doing the job before we have the title or the salary, you are in charge of your destiny. |

Small companies can be great or horrible for job changes. Successful ones expand, which means a need for more people and more roles. Poor ones tend to have much less flexibility in placing their people in new roles. If you really love this company, talk to your manager and see if they can help you find another role that satisfies and challenges you. If not, start applying elsewhere. Good luck to you! |

Ramblings of holiday depressions aside, you didn't say how long you've been working at your company. You also didn't say where you graduated from: high school or college? (most people would presume "college", but, given the lack of detail of most questions in this website, I take nothing for granted) I also didn't see you say whether you asked your supervisor(s) for more work (and we'd all like to get paid more, so, welcome to the club!).
More job and major-specific details are necessary for anyone to help you, assuming that's what you wanted, as opposed to just feeling sorry for yourself.
Regardless, as someone who is going to be laid-off on Dec 31 (great way to start the New Year, eh?), I strongly suggest that you hold off from doing anything drastic. Sometimes, there are normal, holiday slow-downs, which pick-up within a few weeks. Take a night course (or day course, if you work nights), even if it has nothing to do with your company or major; or do anything else outside of work that will keep you occupied (sports activities; a weekly night out with friends; etc). |

Nobody's going to make it happen except you. Set some goals and work towards them. You can shoot for the stars and hit the moon or shoot for the moon and hit your driveway. it's up to you my friend!! |

this is what i feel right now i've been the company for almost 1 yr and half and im working as a receptionist/secretary this is actually 2 companies a real estate and event management but a small one, my visa is under real estate and my boss hired someone just to focus on babel coz i cannot manage both anymore, he hired someone we have same nationalities we became friends and i tried to cover for her every time she's absent or late i'm always saving her ass coz the business for the event was stopped at that moment and she's doing nothing so she decided to be late and absent sometimes. just today i discovered that my boss will close down the real estate and focus more on event so he finally decided to put up the TEAM for the event now shes doing a lot of things in event which i really dreamt of doing here i am still stucked in the reception!!! i dont like it here anymore i feel useless and worst part is im NOT happy being here anymore , i cannot reach out with my boss coz he is mad *******today i ask my boss if he will allow me to be absent coz im not feeling well he said its not the right time to be absent i said okay i will be in the office before 10 am at the same time i txted my friend/colleague that i might be absent (same time when i texted my boss 7:30am coz our office opened at 9:00am) my friend didnt response that she will be late again so my boss called in the office and she wasnt there too! my boss shouted at me and keeps on asking if i really texted her. :( i dont want my friend to be in trouble t but i guess if i will continue being like this i will be the one to suffer!! and now shes closer to the other co-team of babel they smoke together talk together coz were not really in good terms of the other lady in the event coz the way she acted from the 1st day she sitted on her place ( shes only here for a week) and me? i dunno what i am!! i was here since the company started now i feel like im here but not really here!!!* |
