Definately, if you are involved with a church let them know about the financial troubles and situation. Also contact the toys for tots, Salvation Army, Marine's (because they frequently are known for toy drives), and check with your location DHS or Opportunity Center. If you are on assistance already in particular they can generally point you in the right direction. Also there are usually food pantries that once proof of income is provided you will be given food/household products (depending on the location) which can also free up money for toys. Also around the holidays some food pantries typically also include little stocking stuffer goodies or small gifts, etc for the kiddo's. Don't pay attention to the previous answerer telling you you handled your life incorrectly. That was just inconsiderate. No one is perfect, granted we may not know much about you. But being that you are concerned about your kids waking up Christmas morning to nothing shows that you are a concerned mother. I have been in the same situation unfortunately but have since gotten my life more together, thank goodness. Currently I also have 5 beautiful children, things can and will get better just keep trying and being a good person. Happy holidays! |

Christmas should be time spent with family and not spending money on big presents. Have a family reunion and discuss with them about the situation (unless you have quintuplets under 2!). Maybe there are some presents you could create together, less costly games that would please all of them instead of only one, activities outdoor and family visit with ones you don't get to see often are great ways to bring the Christmas spirit without spending too much. Maybe you could do some toy swap with another family to save you both money.
Keep some money for the food and have the kids help you plan the meal and prepare parts of it in advance. You'll have more time at Christmas time and save money by doing things yourself. Gingerbread cookies are fun to do at all ages! |

Check with your local COMMUNITY ACTION AGENCY, they're usually running foodbanks and stuff like but most of them hold a special Christmas fund drive to give low-income kids gifts for Christmas. That includes "working poor" like you folks.
Churches, the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots... even the kids' school might know of other programs. Our local mall runs a program where they put angels on the tree describing the kid ("6 years old, girl, size whatever") and you pick an angel then buy a gift for him or her. |
