I have a check for $2994 I think its a scam, but it has a real routing number?
well i received a check today for $2,994 im pretty sure its a scam, cause it ask's me to deposit it, then send money to someone else, what if i just cash the check, I called the bank who it came from, its a real routinh number, and Cid Performance tooling is a real company. So obviusly its a real check, that can be cashed, what if i just go ahead, and cash it, and just never follow up with this agent who says im susposed to send her money. Dang im not that greedy, i know theres no hope of me getting $130,000.00 im content with $2,994. So what happens if i just cash the check and dont deposit it, then there later arises a problem, could i get into any serious trouble? I was just going to cash it, then just hold onto the money for a few weeks. Whats the worst that could happen?

SCAM!

Scammers can create fraudulent checks very easily. All it takes is a computer and a laser printer. The routing number and company name may be real, but the check itself is fraudulent.

The best thing to do would be to call the accounting department of the company, and tell them what happened. They will definitely let you know if the check is real or not. If they say it is not call your local police department, postal inspector, or secret service office and report it.

What could happen to you if you cash it? If you have not done any legitimate business with Cid Performance Tooling, then you will be presumed to have known that the check was fraudulent. You could be arrested, charged, and sued civilly by the company for the check amount, plus punitive damages. Even if you don't end up going to jail, your lawyer bills will be 10 times more than the check.

Do the right thing and avoid big legal headaches.

You'll be very sorry if you cash it. It will be returned and you will be charged! You're right it is a scam and you can't beat it!!

Well since you know you did not work for this check then it is not your money. Do you want to know the worst that could happen. You could be charged with fraud by the way that is a felony.
Then you will have to post a bond which could be anywhere from 500.00 to 5000.00 depending on your background. Then you will have to pay for a lawyer which will probably cost you about another 3000.00. Then you will have to pay the court restitution which will be in the amount of the check and any additional court fees. So to sum this up is 3000.00 really worth the 15000.00 it will cost to clear this up and tarnish your name. Think about this.

TALK TO YOUR BANK BEFOR YOU CASH IT..WHY DO YOU HAVE TO SEND THAT OTHER PARTY THE MONEY? WHY DIDN'T THEY JUST SEND THEM THE CHECK?? IT'S A SCAM!!!

juju baby
Did you use the phone number on the check? The reason I ask is if it is a phony check ALL the info on the check would be false. The phone number on the check could be some crook's phone number and of course he's going to say the check is okay. I work in a bank and over the years I've seen a lot of people get scammed. If you cash the check and something wrong should occur then you would be responsible. The bank will charge your account for the funds you received plus a service charge for the return item. It depends on the bank whether or not they will report the incident. In which case you could be held accountable for cashing a fraudulent check. One thing I learned early on and I've told all my customers if it sounds to good to be true then it probably is. If you decide to do anything I would say take the check to your local police department along with any letter that was sent with it and make out a police report. These crooks work from all over the world and have victimized thousands of people. The FBI has there hands full with these cases, but welcome anyone who prevents themselves from becoming victims!!

Chances are, your bank will place the funds on hold to ensure that the payment is valid. Just because the routing numbers are valid, doesn't mean that there isn't a stop payment issued on the check, that the account number is correct, or that the account/check even belongs to the company...

If I were you, leave it alone. If another person wants the money, then let them have the check. You will get yourself in trouble, and then be responsible for repayment of the funds. You may then be prosecuted by the bank if they press civil charges for check fraud.

The Weasel
First, ask yourself why would you be receiving a check for this amount, or any amount for that matter?

If there is no reason, then it's a scam. Don't waste your time.

lilmonki
Ask yourself this... why would anyone just send you a check for three grand, and then want you to send the money to someone else? Is that someone else out of the country? (If so, than this is definitely a scam.) What does Cid Performance do? Are they a legitimate business or a front for a scam? Why did they choose you, of all people, to take care of this little transaction, and why couldn't they do it themselves?

Chances are, my friend, that this is a scam, and that the check is no good. If you cash it, and send the money away (or don't deposit it) an the check turns out to have been bad, than you will be liable for the amount.

lmao, i got one of those last week. only mine was for 5,000 and some dollars. i was supposed to sign the check, and return it, to get the money i won. it was a european lottery, but it came from china, the check was drawn on a bank from ohio, and i was supposed to send it back to somebody in paris. i called my post office, they gave me the right number to call. i called, i was told to send everything, even the envelope to chicago, it is a scam. lmao

This definitely sounds like a scam to me. If it was legitimate, they shouldn't ask you to send money back to someone.
Do you know what the check is for and/or who it is coming from?

Decaf23
I'd get a lawyer to check through everything, it's not free money for no reason.

But if it's a check, and you can deposit it, I'm guessing it would work out.

The check could have been stolen from a legitimate company and altered to be made out to you. If that's the case, by cashing it you are breaking the law. If you cash it in a different state than the one in which it was issued, then you are breaking Federal law.

In short, the worst that could happen is that the FBI shows up on your doorstep and you spend several years in a Federal prison. Not worth it.

crazyem
Why don't you take it to your bank and see if they will honor it. You'll have to wait maybe two weeks for it to go through the clearinghouse. If it passes through okay in that amount of time, go ahead and do whatever. But don't just deposit and take money out of your account. Of course it's a real routing number - people have had to get more clever with their schemes. That doesn't mean that it's a current check. And how could you possibly get in trouble for not cashing it?

Perfectly flawed.

I would NOT do it. Just shred it. If you're worried its a scam, check out bbb.com.
