I have a spending addiction,am on state benefits as cant work due to ill health and i'm a divorced single?
middle aged mum. I live in council property and am on debt management as I'm in serious debt 'cause of spending addiction.I cant stop spending.I need help.I often end up spending all my benefits then have no money to pay my weekly instalments on household bills or to put food on table.I have 12 creditor debts and wonder whether I should declare bankcruptcy as it'll take forever to pay everything off on debt management.Has anyone out there been in simular situation to me,and gone bankcrupt?Would I be liable to lose my council flat, and everything I've got in it.Wouldnt everything be taken to go towards my debts,or can they only take things like cars, which I havent got or very expensive valuables.Where would I stand if I was to make myself bankcrupt?as I'll be on debt management for at least another 12 years otherwise. Also how can I cure myself of my spending addiction?Does anyone know anywhere I can find help for this in the west midlands?Denise.

hi, sorry to hear of your situation, but you cannot just declare yourself bankrupt, in order for you to be declared bankrupt it will cost you approx £400, but it is only usually permissible when there are no other way of you paying your debt, unfortunately as you are already on debt management you have a way out, your real problem is spending before paying living expenses, contact your local Citizens Advice, or maybe you can appoint a relative to receive your benefits and control your budget for you, sorry its not a magic wand to make your problem go away, but every journey starts with the first step, good luck

Hi Denise, sorry to hear about your troubles.
Have you been to Citixen Advice Bureau for financial advice?
For the addiction side of your problem, you may find a few sessions of hypnosis could help. Your addictive behviour is possibly due to stress or insecurities. You are divorced and not working and this could be making your mood low and causing low self esteem which contributes to compulsive buying as a way to make you feel better....although the benefits are only temporary while you go deeper and deeper into debt and the anxiety worsens.
I hope you find someone who can help you.
Good luck x

Ps. try the link below for a therapist who may be able to help.

I have a friend that has the same problem. She loves to spend money. Fortunately she has a husband who is willing to work several jobs to keep things afloat. I suggest you get mental counseling. My friend has a compulsive disorder. Religion may help as I see you are seeking some information on that also. Try talking to your local Jehovah's Witnesses. I have given my friend counsel, told her to read the bible, and she has improved somewhat. Read your bible and pray. I don't know how the rules work in England regarding bankruptcy, but your credit will be ruined for many years, and maybe that is what your need. Best wishes.

Have a look at an IVA it's a regulated agreement between u and your creditors, u pay a fixed monthly figure that u can afford for say 3 years and the rest is written off.

Look at the info on the national debtline website and look at the last question in the dropdown menu in the frequently asked questions section, there's also info on bankruptcy, someone i know went bankrupt for about 15k and they had none of the belongings taken or sold and after 1 year were discharged with a clean slate and even offered credit again but the stain stays with you so the IVA is very popular now, here's the link...

http://www.nationaldebtline.co.uk/england_wales/debt_advice.php

Info on bankruptcy is at the top of that drop down list too, good luck and try and stop spending or maybe see a therapist through the doc as it can be attributed to stress, anxiety etc and can be helped with talk therapy.

YOU can not be serious! Try spending some time reflecting on the cash YOU have squandered, and why you are now single. As for using Bankrupts as a way out, what about all the innocent people YOU have hurt!!!!

If you declare yourself bankcrupt and your creditors can prove you have been neglience with your spending, you can be bankrupt for up to 15years.

1st cut all cards up and then you should look at what you've brought ie tv, dvd's etc. Try selling them off. Putting the cash straight onto the credit cards. Also go to your local citizens advice, they are the best ppl, to help with debt management. The also maybe able to put you in touch with someone, who can help with your addiction.

Firstly, thank you for enjoying spending my money so much.

Secondly, go to your local Citizens Advice Bureau and ask them to refer you to a tenancy or floating support service that is undoubtedly available. Your local council would also be able to do this for you. They will help with debt management plans and liaise with your creditors and stuff. They can also help you apply for bankruptcy, be warned though, if the court feel that the means of repaying your debts has been within your grasp and you have chosen to squander (my money) on unecessary purchases, some things may not be included in the order and you will hopefully still be liable to repay them

Hi Denise, with regards to declaring yourself bankrupt yo should get in touch with CCCS they are a charity so you will not be charged! They will go through your income/expenditure and advise you on your best course of action, if this is bankruptcy (which by the sounds of it will be) they can put you in touch with some companies (british gas is one) that help people to pay the bankruptcy fees which would otherwise cost you £330.00. If you become bankrupt and have no assets or money to pay towards your debts then basically they will take nothing from you. But be warned if it is shown that you have been spending money willy nilly prior to the bankruptcy the court will come down very hard on you and could make a payments order against you. Clean up your act and make the bankruptcy a fresh start. Once the debts are gone make a budget and stick to it no matter what even if it means roping in family to help you hold money for bills if your scared you may spend it otherwise.
