I have always been told that if a store or business refuses to take payment in legal US currency they have to give you the items free under federal law. Is this true?
I ask after seeing a news story where a man was not permitted to pay $56 in pennies. They were even rolled. What is the standard on this? He was paying a traffic ticket and the place does accept cash. Additional Details This place takes cash.
All money has the same legal standing from a penny to a $500 bill (no longer in print).
if they didnt allow him to pay with pennies then yea that's against the law. every penny counts - literally.

Not true.
You are supposed to accept all US currency but you have no obligation to accept $56 in pennies if it causes an inconvenience to you.

Good point, but I really don't think it's that easy tho. I wish it was. There are place of business that do not accept cash. I don't think that's illegal. But I could be wrong. The only way it may be illegal is if store didn't have a sign posted, saying, we do NOT accept USD, But like I said I'm still not sure at all...
Good Luck.... Money is money, I don't care if your tab is $200, if you have 20,000 pennies than they MUST accept all the 20,000 pennies.

You are incorrect...that is not a law.

I've never heard that, but I would seek a lawyer. He's paying in cash, who cares how it's paid, pennies or a $100 bill.

don't know. seems like it should be a law. or at least i wish it was!

1) Doesn't count for change because counting change is a waste of time.
2) If the place doesn't accept cash than no. It's no different than an online store only accepting paypal instead of money orders.
3) I have never ever heard of this 'law'.

They must accept paper money. Coins do not count. I applaud the guy who attempted it and find it hilarious.
