I just got scammed for $200 dollars. What do I do now?
Today, on November 10th, I was at work when some guy came in and asked if my coworker and I wanted a laptop. We said sure because they were only $200. I had bought a so called Acer 14.1 inch laptop when a coworker bought a 15 inch one. I went home and before I could unbox it, my coworker called me. He told me that his box was full of phonebook paper and there was nothing inside. I quickly opened it and what did I see? Nothing but paper! What should I do? Call the police, what? Please respond quickly! I don't know when he might leave the state!
Additional Details
Also, the man claimed he needed the money for his hotel payment, so what the heck?

These boxes usually contain bricks or roof tiles.

Yes, you should report the matter to the police. If you have CCTV, you should try to find relevant pictures. The most important thing is that, the next time a stranger asks if you want to buy a laptop/games console/mobile phone/etc. for cash, just say "NO". At best the item could be stolen and, if the police think that this was your motivation for believing that you'd get something, they will not be helpful for obvious reasons.

I am presuming that you paid cash. If you paid by any other means, you should contact your bank and cancel or reverse the payment.

Hopefully you will realise that paying a stranger $200 for a box with a picture of a laptop on the outside isn't a good idea.

Sometimes the same scam involves you seeing the contents of the box/envelope before it is resealed and switched for another box/envelope that is identical on the outside but with worthless contents. For example, "here's some fake currency - try one (a real one)in that shop - they took it - yes, they are good fakes - you can have $500 worth for $200 but don't spend it all in one place" - you get to look at an envelope with $500 in it, give the hustler $200 and walk away with a worthless envelope after the switch. The police wouldn't help because you've been looking to deal in forged notes.

If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Caviat Emptor: Let the buyer beware. There is nothing you can do. You bought something that even if there were computers in there, was not legit. You were taken. The only thing you can do is tell everyone in your area to look out for the guy and to not be scammed as well. You can call the police with a description of the person and if they aren't busy they can get prints off the box if you haven't touched all over it, but they most likely won't do that unless they are getting lots of calls over the same thing.

Why in the world would you not open the box first? And why in the world would someone be selling 200 dollar laptops?

You know that thought in your head when it happened that said "This seems too good to be true"?? Well, next time, listen to it.

Call the police. Tell them your story and a description of the person. Give all the info you can. You may not get your money back, but this guy may get caught, or the word could get spread so other people don't fall for his scam.

You can call the police... and they'll take a report and ask you why you were so gullible as to believe someone would really sell you a laptop for $200.

I always wondered who fell for these scams.

LOL you got took! sorry about that but it happens to everyone at some point. Lucky for you it was only 200 dollars. Don't call the cops, it is probably in your best interest to mind your own business. Take the 200 dollar loss rather than risk your safety. This thief knows where you work! For you own sake, don't be a snitch, you shoulda checked the box!! Lesson learned?

Sure call the police and tell them you were trying to buy a stolen computer and got ripped off. No legal computer is that price and I can't believe someone would buy something like this without looking inside first.

i think you should give everything you know about him and call the police ..because if you don't they might scam somebody else....this happened to my dad.trust me

$200? You got off cheap for a life lesson. I've heard of retired people having their entire life savings scammed off of them. Don't get me wrong, I empathize, but in the nineteen seventies there used to be a commercial which was a simple animation about a man who trusted someone and was scammed out of everything he owned.

The commercial or PSA against US Mail Fraud, ended with what became the buzz-saying of the decade, 'If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."

Chin up and you'll be ready for the next one.

U can call the police and file a report but dont expect results. Take the lesson for what its worth. At least the scam was relatively small and u can avoid a much more damaging one next time.
