See if you can find someone else to work for you; that way you can ask for the time off and your manager won't have to rearrange staffing as you will have done it already. The alternative is not to mention it at all and just take a day off sick, say you have mild food poisoning from an undercooked turkey!

I would just say that you honor Boxing Day as part of christmas, it's a Canadian tradition in your family, can you please have the holiday off so you can celebrate with your family.

Does not make much difference, he/she will already have heard every good and not so good reason for getting a day off over xmas.

For one thing you should not TELL your manager you need the day off but you should ASK him/her if you can have the day off. Of course, they are under no obligation to give you that day off so keep that in mind also. I would suggest having a alternate plan in the event that this one doesn't pan out for you.
