I need help about ebay please...?
I thinking of selling on ebay and have just opened an account, but just want to know that when i sell an item how do i know how much the postage costs to send the item? i know it probably sounds silly! Do i have to go and get it weighed and priced at a post office before i sell it?

G!
First stick it on a set of scales. I use the kitchen or bathroom scales. Then go to http://www.royalmail.co.uk or http://www.usps.com and you will find a postage calculator which allows you to see the prices.

Remember to put it in the shipping container when you stick it on the scales as that will affect the price.

I hope that helps. If not, contact me.

yes you will need to get it weighed, but you can charge as much as you like for postage. ebay takes a percentage of the final sale price too x

i think most people just guess once you've done it a few times you will start knowing the prices of your items.

citychic
it would be advisable to have the postage worked out - once you register an item for sale you need to have the correct price for everything - I think you can leave it blank and ask to be emailed for price as the price may vary .

if you're in the uk you can go to the royal mail website and it will give you a guide as to how much the package will cost to send just use a set of home scales to weigh it and off you go. by the way you also have some costs to pay to ebay for every item listed based on the starting price of the item.

i had an experience like you before, I was an eBayer (but not that long), the most important is get the price list from the postage company. DHL is very good but very expensive, do not forget to try UPS too. Nothing wrong if you want to know the exact weight of your items. In my point of view, ebay will not give you a lot of profit but it is all depends on the item that u want to sell. If you interested in internet business, go for the internet business, which requires less of your time and the one that will not make you feel headache with web designing, or which require IT knowledge. Second, choose the internet based company which offer you the opportunity and at the same time giving you the convenience to start the business. Third, choose the business, which does not require big money to start it.

All the above is only available from: http://www.website.ws/melissafernald
Honestly, I tried so many opportunities offered through the internet and this is the only one that really works.

you can guess the post cost and then take a hit if you guess it wrong (the price you set for the post is all you can charge).

http://www.royalmail.com for the postage prices, kitchen scales and your own stock of posting stationery is a safer bet.

Always send by registered post - it protects both seller and buyer and it's cheap.

Go buy a few things before you sell anything. You need a rating. I would not buy from anyone who had not traded at all before. If you sell straight away you should expect a lower price.

Ebay has a special calculator that can calculate the shipping cost for you. Another good resource us the U.S. Postal Service online at www.usps.com. If you don't know the weight or still are confused about the shipping costs, yes, you can take it down to the Post Office and have it weighed and I'm sure they'll be able to answer your questions. I agree...the shipping is the confusing part of selling on Ebay...I've gone through that too. Good luck! :-)

Here's the link to Ebay's shipping center:

The Postal Service now has a deal with eBay with a special eBay package. A flat rate parcel of $7.77 to whatever can fit inside the package.

You can go to www.usps.com or contact your local office.

You can go along to the post office to get a price , but many people don't bother and just go by guesswork. Don't forget when charging for postage and packaging forget about costs like wrapping materials , your petrol to the post office etc.

I sell on ebay a bit and when i put down postage we usually estimate it also if you look on ebay and find what you are selling and see what other people are charging for the same item (or similar size and weight) hope this helps also if you have big items you can check on the royal mail and see how much they charge.

if you go to the web page for the post office now know the weight of the parcel you want to send it will give you a rough price

If you are in the UK, weigh your item, don't forget packaging, then look at the Royal Mail website and it will tell you how much for that weight.

Don't forget to add packaging costs.
You will need to decide wether to add a handling fee.
Do you want a signature at the other end. (recorded)
Do you want to send it 1st or 2nd class.

Ian :-)
Yes, price the packing and the postage and then add 10% for error.
Its surprising how many people lose money through bad postage practice.

Weigh it at home on some kitchen scales or bathroom scales depending on size then use your nations mail service website to get an estimate, of course take into account packaging costs to. If its a large item consider a courier service.

http://www.royalmail.com/portal/rm if in UK.

http://www.parcel2go.com/?lpsrc=google

Also if in UK from 21st August you must also take into account size of the parcel...it's all on the website above.

or in USA

Having it weighed at the post office is the best way. However, the post office (www.usps.gov) also provides online tools for you to estimate the shipping costs -- you of course need to know its approximate weight.

I do all of that from home. I have scales and priority boxes and I order the postage on USPS.com.
