Anonymous | I received someone else's package, what shall I do? |
This morning I received a package which was sent via Special Delivery before 1pm. It was so early in the morning, I didn't sign properly!
Now the package said on it 24 of my street, but I live at 34, and my street doesn't have a 24!
The package had an expensive satallite navigation system in it, and I can't return it my self, no time but is there any way that someone could know it came here and comes to collect it?
It looks like it was purchased online, and it was dispatched yesterday.

If I just left it there would no one know it's here?

The package just has the person's name and 24 of this street, WHICH DOESN'T EXIST!
It doesn't say the name of the company, but it has a return address on it, but I'm not paying to post it back and I don't have the time.. is someone coming to pick this up or what, I shouldn't be obliged to do anything with it, all I did was open the envelope.. |

call the delivery service and state to them, that you did unfortunately sign for it but didnt notice till after the guy left, that the packag was NOT for you. that it has someone elses name on it, and was not even the right address..there for not only an error on you for signing..BUT mostly the drivers for bringing it to 34 addresss instead of 24..OR least not askin if you were in fact so an so ( the name on packaging.) it is the drivers job to make sure it goes to the right address and the right person gets it. have them send out someone now to come pick it up. it is not your responsibility. it is between the delivery company and the company the package came from.
if it was special deliver sort f situation, that means too it is not the responsibility of the post office either...if it was from like UPS,DHL or Fed X...they are the ones that need to deal with it, whoever did the delivery.
they do hve you name as the signature and where it was delivered...so its best to just get it cleared up. call the company that delivered it..have them pick it up, they can try redlivery or its up to them to send back to the company it came from.
( been through a similar situation )
--perhaps look up the persons name in phone book, and ring them up...and ask them if they have ordered anything recently that they are waiting for ( DO NOT TELL THEM WHAT THE ITEM IS) tell them you recieved a package with their name on it but they need to be able to tell you what the item is and where it was spose to be comming from. this way they cantjust say yes, and be a theif. |

you signed so they will know it was delivered to you, and you could be charged with theft if you keep it, i would wrap it back up and put back into letter box, with Return to sender on it, that way the post office can return it and the person who bought it originally can be reinstated, it would not take any time just to put it into the letterbox. OR i am sure you have someone who could drop it into the post office/letter box. someone would be paying for that item that you received by mistake, also, if you contact the company it came from, they will arrange for it to be picked up by courier. |

You said early? One o'clock in the afternoon is not early. If it is not yours than call the post office for a pick up or which ever service did the delivery. |

send it back to the company, the return address should be on the invoice.
if your thinkin of keeping it, once the true owners complain they wil soon track where it went and you will be charged for theft, just a warning. |

just call the UPS, FEDEX, DHL guys..and tell them you're a BONEHEAD.
they'll send someout there to pick it up for a re-delivery. DUH. |

Alright, the first thing I have to say to you is good job. I mean it, probably 90% of people in America would have just kept the package. First thing to do would be to look at the company where it was bought from, and ask about any recent orders in your area, and see if they can tell you who it belongs to. However, if they can not or won't give you much information, you can always take it back to the postal office, and ask them to find the recipient. They'll do their best job, I mean come on, it is their job, to find the recipient. Once again man, good job, way to not be selfish and cruel. The guy who gets this is going to be real appreciative. |

We used to get mail for another person's name and the house number and street were correct for our house. We soon discovered there was another identical street name but in a different suburb of the same city, and it should have gone there. Perhaps that happened to you. Look up the person's name in the phone book, or better still, contact the Special Delivery people. It is their job to deliver it correctly - they were paid for this - they will have to come and collect it. Their records will show the consignment number, sender and intended recipient. All easily sorted with one phone call.
Would someone know you have it? The delivery peole do. And they have your signature to prove it. Wouldn't you rather be remembered for your honesty ?? |

you should take it to your nearest post office and give it to the person and say that you got someone else's package. it is very simple. if you got it in the mail you should just look at the address and ship it to their address. |

Actually as the package was not addressed to you by name and was not your house number you should not have opened it anyway - most people know their own name even at 8am! Take it into any post office. |

I think the real intention behind your question is to seek approval from others as it sounds you have already made your mind up in wanting to keep it and are looking to validate that with reasons (24 doesn't exist, no time, not paying to return item, I shouldn't be obliged etc.).
A question that raises ethics is subjective so it's up to you what you decide but if you chose the devil on your right shoulder... you would get away with it as there is insufficient evidence to prove you took delivery of it (it's not a stretch of the imagination that there are dishonest delivery guys who sign for the packages themselves and keep them!)
Tanika97 said that they would be able to prove it was you but a delivery guy's word and a partial signature is not strong, the delivery company would not wish to pursue it and the Police would not be interested in getting a partial signature forensically tested!
