I started my first job yesterday and it went HORRIBLY...?
I started working at a food place, my first job ever. I have never had cashier expirience. They put me up front almost immediately and it was so intimidating. The menu machine is so confusing when you look at it..it looks like too many buttons and the customers say their orders way too fast. I had such a bad time. I couldnt remember what they ordered for drinks, I would forget how much change they gave me..it was messy. I was nervous and some of the customers made it harder. I felt like I was slowing things down. I feel like I will never get the hang of this stupid job...any suggestions from expirienced workers?

Oh, honey, I'm so sorry you had a bad first day! I remember a job I had once, and I decided halfway through my first day that I was NOT going to come back the next day. But I did, and it turned out to be one of the most interesting jobs I've ever had, and I stayed with the company for a number of years. Try talking to your boss- tell him/her that you feel you need some more training to familiarize yourself with the menu and the cash register. If you tell people "I'm sorry this is taking longer than usual, but I'm in training", most people will be understanding and patient. One of the hardest things about working with 'the public', however, is that there will ALWAYS be some jerk in a bad mood who gets off on making other people feel bad. Just keep smiling and don't let them get to you. They're losers. Maybe you could take a menu home and spend some time studying it. Also, get your mom or a friend to help you practice making change. Stick with it, and you will be the fastest worker in the place in no time!

It takes time to train especially if you never had a job before. As if there is a manual you can read on job training, some people learn better by reading instead of hands on..or vise versa. The first week is usually the worst...stick with it..You'll get it.

im feelin this
you have to get used to it...once you figure it out it will be like riding a bike you wont forget it

Keep your head up! Customer service is hard, but many have conquered it. You will create your own groove in no time! You'll see.

Pengy
As in all jobs until you get the hang of things, you will be nervous and frustrated, remember this is going to happen to you every time you start something new. It is a learning curve, and actually the best way to master is to be as they say, thrown to the wolves. Within a week or two you will master it and wonder, and remember why where you so nervous. Repetition makes the task grow easier. Hang in there you will be fine

island3girl
its always tough on the first day no matter what job it is. you are not stupid, just inexperienced - and that will come quickly enough.

dont quit - it will get better. you may just have to apologize, smile and say "i'm new at this, could you please repeat that again?" it's okay - we have ALL been there

good luck to you

That's is just how first day on the job is like. I recall my first job-my first day; I thought it was the end of the world, I did everything wrong and I went home and thought I'd never go back! So, after a good nights rest and some reassuring you'll be fine. Your employer should understand that it's your first job and first customer experience, they need to have you watch someone first other than just push you out on the floor.

Don't worry though, it just takes a couple days to pick up on new things. - Make jokes with the customers saying you are new and make sure to smile and be cute- People can't help but be nice and help you through it.

Don't give up- Having a job that challenges you @ first only makes you stronger.

wow, that sucks, now I dont feel like starting in mine...I wanna start as a cashier too... in Kmart!!! which I've heard it gets pretty messy too although it has nothing to do with food...

BUt dont listen to my pessimistic words please :), I'm still a natural slacker, with no work experience, my brain is just too used to books and school...

but one thing I can tell you: any new experience NEVER goes right the first time, that's a fact, the best thing you can do is sticking to your plans and goals, and your goal now should be learning everything concerning to your new job and getting used to it, and be aware that NOBODY is born full of knowledge, your job is something in which you are still a baby at and you have to practice and learn first....

keep on there, perseverance is your weapon here, dont feel bad, I'm positive that soon you'll be dominating there....CHEER UUUPPP!!!!

Terry
The first day's work I ever did, I was filing mail at the tax office. I completely did the filing the wrong way, and had to spend my second day going through EVERY tax file to fix what I did wrong! I felt completely stupid.

The fact is, this is the kind of thing that happens to all of us. Tell your supervisor how bad you felt about the day, and ask them to give you more supervision so you don't mess up. If they are any good at their job, they'll tell you (a) you didn't do so bad for a first day, and (b) of course they'll help you!

Hang in there. Every new job will have challenges, and you WILL make more mistakes. We tend to feel we are the only person screwing up, but in fact everyone gets things wrong from time to time. Just try to learn from each mistake and work to improve your performance over time.

No-one died; no-one got hurt. It's just food!!

Kooties_2000
I agree with Terry. "No one died, no one was hurt." Chin up kiddo! The only failure is in no longer trying! Don't give up.

Go to your supervisor and ask him/her if you could follow someone around for at least a full day so you will feel more confident until things start making more sense. Hang in there!

stevetower
My wife went through the exact things you are describing when starting a new job primarily using a computer she didn't know before hand how to operate, with a little experience, now she is the person everyone else comes to with questions. Hang in there, you will get better quickly.

psycho at 17
Yea I know exactly how you feel. My first day at taco bell was shitty too. What i had to do was meet with the night crew and find some of the best friends I ever met. They taught me everything and I like my job now. You just have to find the right person to let you in and show you around. Trust me I had my one year anniversary last week! I don't want food service forever but it dosn't hurt to have fun while you need some cash!!

ARCHANGEL
lol just relax when you get nervous more mistakes occur, and if you get fired pls laugh it off fast food jobs are a joke that wont follow u around but pls take this as a learning experience to pursue a higher education so you are not stuck on this carrer path forever

Try to keep your cool and try not to be too hard on yourself. It was your first day. Things get easier the more you do them. Hopefully you'll get enough nice customers to balance out the ignorant ones. Good luck.

sorry your first day went so badly. in time it will get better. it's too bad they put u up front so quickly. they usually train on fries of something easier so you can get to know the menu and feel comfortable w/the procedures. don't take it too hard. and by the way, some ppl think its fun to pick on minimum wage workers for some strange reason--think trolls in the real world. hang in there, your next job will be a breeze!

Flyinghorse
You have great advice here! :-)

I just want to say, that ANY job, when done for the first time it is intimidating. And we have to practice and learn. It will get better, because it will happen in other new jobs in your life. This happens to all of us. You just have to get used to it. Don't give up and take it as a wonderful school. Enjoy the process, in a week you will be laughing abaout this.

Cheer up!! And don't be so hard on you!

duster
first of all, you were supposed to have been trained first, wich obviously was not the case. If you have any doubts or questions about some thing, sound off.

I know you are over whelmed, don't try too hard, but do the best you can. If you survive the first two weeks, things ought to get better.

If management tries to push you, just explain you are doing the best you can, thay hired you, because they needed help, you are working because you need income.
