Well, yes and no. I think it is common courtesy to speak English in public (hearing people speak in a language you can't understand makes everyone nervous! Can you imagine moving to a country were you don't speak THEIR language), but to speak another language in your own home should be entirely up to you. I think as long as those who decide to live here make an honest attempt to learn our language (which is easily becoming the hardest language to learn with all the slang we use and abbreviations) than it is okay. But we wouldn't be America if we made a law delaring only one language, our diversity is what makes us a colorful country. Should it be in English in Yahoo Answers, of course! Good question. |

Those expecting to live and work in the USA, yes. As much as I would expect anyone who lives in Japan to learn the language.
Not just speak and understand, but also know how to use it properly. The use of I over me and proper word usage must be necessary.
Those visiting should learn a few phrases to get them by. |
