I want to try and start to buy items on eBay, do you have any tips i should know?
Also, is it a bad idea to pay by a money order?

Using Paypal is probably the best way to pay for items won on eBay. They have buyer protection for you if you pay with them. I have been on eBay for five years and have had only one problem in over 450 transactions. I was able to get my money back using Paypal.

You should research every item you are buying before placing a bid. Look at the seller's feedback to see if they have many complaints. Check the shipping prices on the items to make sure you aren't buying a pair of shoes for 1 dollar and paying 12 dollar shipping.

If you are concerned about payment methods you should check out thier website: www.paypal.com.

95% of the sellers on eBay are nice cooperative people so if you have any questions on an item ask them a question. Most will gladly respond.

Be sure to read every auction in its entirety that way you are familiar with that seller's policies. If you are nervous about your first purchases then make sure you purchase your items from a seller with a return policy. Many shippers offer this (though you would have to pay return shipping).

Start off with a couple of smaller, low dollar items to get the ball rolling and to familiarize yourself with how it all works. I would also suggest purchasing from a seller located in the same country as you (makes your transaction so much easier).

Good Luck to You!!

Read everything and research. Make sure you read the description very carefully and if you are unsure of something ask do not assume.

Check the sellers feedback. Look for similar items and see if the prices are fair. Check the shipping before bidding because if you win you will be responsible for the shipping cost and it will be too late to change your mind. Also make yourself aware of the terms of returning or refunds.

Basically just pay attention. You learn pretty quick. Just read and reread and ask questions you will be fine.

Once you set up your account (name and password), there are many free articles you can read online about the bidding process, etc. They offer good advice. Also, it is easy to get caught up in a bid war with another person, so decide ahead of time your maximum bid and stick with it. That way you won't pay more than you planned to.

I have had good experiences paying with PayPal, and there is a way to trace it and get help from eBay if things go awry. Also, your item/s ship faster this way. With a money order, you have less protection.

Best wishes. Have fun.

Be sure to check the feedback rating of the seller. If the seller will not provide you with a street address and instead gives you a post office box, look out. Try to avoid anybody with a feedback rating less than 10, but if a "zero feedback bidder" sends you a cashier's check that clears, its OK. Be careful - there are some creeps on Ebay. Watch out for bogus "second chance offers" that don't come through Ebay messages, and remember - if it sounds too good to be true, it probaby is. Get the book "Ebay for Dummies" too. Good luck!

First and most importantly... KNOW WHAT A REASONABLE PRICE IS!!! Don't buy that golf club for $95 when you can get the same thing at the store for $25.

Know shipping costs and make sure to add that in when bidding.

Look at the sellers feedback. Read it and use it to judge the honesty of the person you're dealing with.

Money orders are okay.

i agree with that's been said but if your worried then there's ebook around you can read which will help you loads. you must read all eBay adverts (listings) very carefully and read peoples feedback, feedback can be a bit iffy but you will be able see problems in this if you read carefully. if you are still unsure buy yourself some cheep ebooks. and do sign up for a paypal account there's millions of places to use it not just eBay, and its a safe to shop on the Internet with this as no one gets your bank or credit card details. just paypal.

most people will only accept paypal as a payment - it's free for you and fast for them. also your items will ship faster. signup at paypal.com.

when buying from someone, look at their feedback and read what other people say about them. If there is a negative, try to find it and see why a bad feedback was left. And read all the details of the auction carefully. Most people are not on there to scam, but things do happen. I've had run-ins with bad people twice in about 10 years and I got my money back.

If I am doing an auction bid, I usually try to wait until the last minute to bid because bidding early will only drive up the price, but beware, other people wait until the end and the highest price wins.

Ebay is a great way to find things that are very difficult to find elsewhere =) Have fun (but be careful, because it can get very expensive, very fast. Sometimes you just don't add up everything you have bought when you go on a bit of a spree!)

dont buy stuff from China, allot of times the thing you want is 10 bucks but the shipping or box is 150, they rip you off.

Hello~
First off before you bid on anything - make sure to completely read the description, and ask the seller any questions that you might have...

Check the sellers information on when they want paid and what they accept { some will accept money orders - other will not} ;also check when and how they will deliver.....

Check the sellers ratings and read their profile...

Be sure to look at where the item is located at ...Some people will not bid on items that are over-seas , due to being more expensive to deliver the item....

Enjoy and the best advice is know what you are bidding on and what it is worth!

It's not a bad idea to pay with a money order, but it's best to pay through paypal....it's safe and fast. You'll get your items quicker, too because you can pay instantly and not have to worry about going and getting the MO, sending it and waiting for it to arrive and possible getting lost in the mail. Be sure to always check the seller's feedback. A good seller will have a rating of 98.6% or higher.....stick to those! When bidding, always bid your absolute highest bid and you'll only have to ever bid one time. Ebay will bid for you up to that amount...it's called proxy bidding. Usually, if you win, you'll pay less than your max amount, but a lot of newbies lose items because they bid small amounts and not what they were really willing to pay. Make sure you read the entire auction including the terms of sale and ask any questions BEFORE you bid. Bidding is a binding contract with the seller and you can get kicked off Ebay for nonpayment if you get enough Non payer strikes against you. NEVER do business with anyone from Nigeria.....they're scam artists who will want you to wire them money. Lastly, go to Ebay's website and read everything you can. Check out the Answer Center under Community....loads of info there. Good Luck!!
