I will have my own office at my new job. Is it generally OK to decorate your office at work?
I don't mean just putting up some pictures. I was hoping to bring in some small, but cute decor from Pier 1. Maybe a few candles in neat holders (I wouldn't burn them), and some nice pictures to hang on the wall. Maybe some shelves. If my work is OK with it, would that be acceptable? Or is it better to not have personal decorations?

It would be very understated and simple. I keep my decor at home simple but nice.

It depends on your office policy. Large corporations especially often have very specific rules about what can and cannot be displayed in your workspace. If your company has no policy start small...family photos and such. Check out what other people do and then start to personalize your space a little more. Just don't put up anything offensive and don't let it get too cluttered.

See what kind of decorations other workers have in their own offices. Try not to put too much stuff at a time. If you hesitate,I don't think it would be a problem to ask your superior.

Big Bobby Clobber
Find out what is allowed and what other people do. A few pictures and cute doodads are usually okay. But this is a place for work, and not a place for personal expression

Bad Kitty!
Personal accents are fine, but dont' go overboard.

Booky
Why not? If your work is fine with why shouldn't you? It is your space and you'll be spending time their. Just don't go overboard, it is an office, not your bedroom. Have fun with it!

?
tasteful and elegant yes, but getting real personal with family pics, your troll collection, pictures of Jesus, and the kids artwork is too much. especially if your office is open to clients.

Just_gone
Ask about their policy. Is it in the handbook?

Katiecat
It really depends on your office. Do other people of your same level decorate their offices? In general, I'd say it's perfectly fine to bring some small items from home, but it sounds like you're going all out. Especially if you're new, this can be misconstrued by your co-workers. I'd wait a few weeks into the new job, gauge the environment, then decide from there. Until then, stick with a potted plant and a pencil cup.

As far as candles and things i think that would be just fine as long as it puts forth a professional air along with the comfortable air you seem to want to portray. Maybe ask you supervisor or kinda take a wander around and look what other people in the office have. other than that you may want to be careful before you put anything up that needs nails or what not... check with the maintainance people or what not just to make sure you don't get in trouble.
