They still need to be able to lock the door in case of a burglary.
Also, there are certain holidays that they are closed. |

Do you think they would close if the power went out? |

After a robbery, the store has to be locked. When the power is out, the door must be locked. Most of the time the people on 3rd shift have to close down for about 20 minutes to run the daily reports, and sometimes do cigarette inventories. Most are closed on certain holidays. And then again there are some stores, that while they ARE open 24/7, they conduct business through a window and a drawer... like a bank drive-up. If the clerk has to take a leak and there are no other employees around, they lock the door to prevent theft. There are many, many reasons for them to have locks on their doors. |

Maybe there is only one worker working one night. She falls down and has blood gushing from some part of her and has to go to the hospital. She would need to lock the door before she left! |

Sometimes the store clerk has to use the loo. |

Because the doors were cheaper with the locks on them, due to mass production. |

what if there was horrible inclement weather. the store would be closed and lock in an attempt to avoid looting. |

If a criminal comes in, it can keep them from escaping. Also, it can protect the people inside from any bad people outside if they're threatening to shoot.
I think. |

The locks are in case an emergency or something happens where every one must leave or everyone must stay in the building. For example, if the president were to come to the 7-11 store(which is highly unlikely, but, anything can happen) the secret service would lock the doors so that no one could get in and no one could get out |

So the night shift clerk can stock the coolers without having to come out every time a customer walks in. |

In case of emergencies due to weather hazards, in case of blackout they close, but the clerk usually stays inside until his shift is over, also in case of riot alerts, the clerk has to close the store for his safety. |
