If God is all-knowing does free will exist?

UmaCat
He may know what we are going to do with our lives or what might be the choices we'll make but we don't, so our free will is to conitue to choose.
GL and GQ Thanks

God is not what you imagine or what you think you understand. If you understand you have failed. ~Saint Augustine

Perhaps history is a thing that would stop happening if God held His breath, or could be imagined as turning away to think of something else. ~Herbert Butterfield, Christianity and History

God enters by a private door into each individual. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Cat In The Sink
All knowing doesn't mean all controlling, so yes. (if that's the only variable we're going by).

BIG MIKE
yes. why? you can choose to follow him or not. but what a lot of people keep forgeting is that every choice has a consequence.
"for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction"

you willing give him control of your life, what ever happens its all right. you don't and life give you a bump its not his fault, he still loves you but he does not believe in force.

ok He is all knowing but how does that affect free will? there is absolute free will bcuz there is sin in this world. by this i mean that He teaches what is right but leaves us to take the decisions ourselves. so that is y i can fornicate and lust all bcuz of choice, i know that it is wrong but i have the will to sin. if there was no free will there wldnt b sin, He wld just direct us not to do sth and we wld b more or less robots.

yes because if it didnt then he would be controlling our lives which he doesnt. He gave us free will to have any religion we want. To eat what we want..etc.

Alyssa
YES. That He KNOWS that YOU WILL CHOOSE to do, doesn't mean He chose it for you or forced you to do it. You just choose what you want. But He already knew what YOU would FREELY chose.

I don't quite understand the meaning of the question, but I will try to help.
God is Omniscient, which means all knowing. You have been known since you were knit together in your mother's womb. He knows when you sin, even if you think nobody else does. He knows when you pray and what you are going to pray about...but He still wants you to speak to HIm--it's part of the relationship that Christianity is.
As far as free will goes, He gave us free will. He gave Satan free will and he chose to rebel against God and think he was God's equal. Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden because they had free will. Everyone who lives has the freedonm to sin or not to, to choose to follow God or not to. He wanted us to love Him of our own free wills, He did not want automatons!
There is the deeper issue of Calvinism vs Arminianism. You can look at previous answers I've made on that subject, it is too deep for this forum now.
Due to God's free will that He gave to you and me, we have the choice to obey Him, accept His Word, accept the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. The only One who lived life in this world and was able to do it without sinning. He, like us was tempted, especially in the Garden of Gethsemane where He was so stressed out over the temptation of not going to the cross, that He burst blood vessels in His head and was bleading like sweat! He lived a perfect life so we could know it is possible. He, by virtue of His perfection, was able to pay the full price for our sins, and He did...oh He did. I cannot fathom the pain, internally and externally, that He faced by making His free will choice to go to the cross and die. Free will is, in many ways a curse, but I am so glad for the blessing that Jesus made His free will choice to die for me.

Sure that free exists. God knows...cause god is not a time limited reality... That's why god knows everything. We are all limited in time and time is created by God. So god stands beyond time... this is not the only thing that we cant imagine about god... we are limited in many things that god isn't; So we should not imagine god in our limited world. Remember we are not the only reality that exists. We are right a small part of the world.

Jessie
Wow, I cant believe you asked this, I just had this topic in ethics class today! It was a very long discussion. My conclusion, is that people who believe that God is all knowing only have free will to an extent. But in contrast, I only have free will to an extent because of my conscious. Is the conscious the same as the provisions that are invoked by God? Im not sure.

This isn't an either/or issue. God is all knowing. He knows everything that is there to know. Classical Theists believe that God knows all future events as actualities. Within that camp, Armenians believe that future decisions of free moral agents are foreknown, but not predetermined. Calvinists believe that the future decisions of free moral agents are foreknown and predetermined. Outside the bounds of Classical Theism, there are the Open View Theists, who believe that God fully knows some future events as actualities, because he has predetermined them, and some future events as contingencies, because they are contingent upon free choices not yet made. They are not yet there to know.

Your question indicates your awareness of the connection between what God knows regarding our future decisions and the freedom of those decisions.

In this scenerio and if "All Knowing" is defined as the absolute, everything... No. You do not have free will. All knowing is the tallest order. It is knowing the placement of every point in time and space down to the smallest denominator both past and present - infinity. There is no amnesia, no "it's just on the tip of my tongue"; only the raw naked truth and pure clarity of "All Knowing". If God is all knowing then he knows what you are going to do and every choice you are ever going to make (even a million google years before you are born) so from His perspective, you're every action would be predetermined but the real key to your fate is that it is know at all. So, if there is an all knowing God and he already knows what you are going to do then your fate is sealed and your free will is an illusion. If this is the case in western religion, why are His subjects led to believe they have a choice? I would not know, but of course because God is all knowing he would know and would have no doubt why he made that choice and even saw himself making that choice an infinity before that choice was made. The paradox I have stepped in here is obvious but that is the result of having an "all knowing" God - he cannot even escape himself. No matter what the Armenians think, foreknowledge of events is predetermination . It is a contradiction and to think otherwise would uphold the illusion that one's choices are not a part of that foreknowledge. The events that are known are set. Concerning known events - every event that confronts us and every choice that we make as a result of those events would all lie within the domain of foreknowledge. If there is no foreknowledge then there is the possibility of free will but that would only be without noone, including God or any other unforseen power, force or agent to have any knowledge of future events. That would mean that even though you are igorant to what may befall you next, the very moment your future is known by anyone whether it is you or someone else, your fate is sealed. Have you ever read, "The Grapes of Wrath"? If you haven't then you're in for a treat especially since you have no clue which way the story will turn. If you have already read it but you intend to read it again then you're still in for a treat, however no matter how many times you read it again and again the story will always unfold the same way whether your interpretation varies or not because the words are stamped permanantly and unchanging in the book.
