lovethatdirtywater | If I'm in a store and I want to pay with ALL PENNIES, do they have to accept them? |
We've all seen the Seinfeld episode when Kramer tries to pay for the calzones at Paisano's with all pennies and he gets turned down. Can a business really do this? A penny is money just like a dollar bill. Does this mean if I went to a car dealership with all ones they wouldn't take it? There must be some sort of law regarding this issue, does anyone know?
I know this question does not seem serious but I'd appreciate serious answers! Thanks... Additional Details "dusk":
The show was just an example, pal. You think I'm stupid enough to get my legal/monetary advice from a TV show?!? Grow up and stop trying to sound smart. |

Dollar bills have a statement stating it is legal tender so merchants do have to accept them. Pennies however, I am not sure. I couldn't see any statement on it as legal tender.
This answers the question:
Question I thought that United States currency was legal tender for all debts. Some businesses or governmental agencies say that they will only accept checks, money orders or credit cards as payment, and others will only accept currency notes in denominations of $20 or smaller. Isn't this illegal?
Answer The pertinent portion of law that applies to your question is the Coinage Act of 1965, specifically Section 31 U.S.C. 5103, entitled "Legal tender," which states: "United States coins and currency (including Federal reserve notes and circulating notes of Federal reserve banks and national banks) are legal tender for all debts, public charges, taxes, and dues."
This statute means that all United States money as identified above are a valid and legal offer of payment for debts when tendered to a creditor. There is, however, no Federal statute mandating that a private business, a person or an organization must accept currency or coins as for payment for goods and/or services. Private businesses are free to develop their own policies on whether or not to accept cash unless there is a State law which says otherwise. For example, a bus line may prohibit payment of fares in pennies or dollar bills. In addition, movie theaters, convenience stores and gas stations may refuse to accept large denomination currency (usually notes above $20) as a matter of policy. |

There IS a maximum number of coins that you are legally obliged to take in a transaction. If a shop wishes, they may take more, but they don't have to. This will doubtless vary from country to country. |

I think that sign that a lot of businesses have "Right to Refuse Service" would cover them should they not want to take the pennies. But yes, it is money...and I think that they should take them, if nothing else but to provide excellent customer service.
When I was in Jr High, my buddy and I would regularly empty out our piggy banks, order pizza, and then flip a coin as to who was going to the door to pay the delivery guy with all those coins...lol |

yea, most places and businesses have a right to refuse service, the penny thing will probably be a breaking point in a sale. |

They have to take the money because it's legal tender, but a store can refuse service to anyone for any reason. A lot of stores won't allow their employees to take the money as it eats up too much time to count the change or if it's rolled, it's really easy to short. So by paying in small change you are wasting the time of the cashier and the people in line behind you and potentially costing the employee their job. |

If you don't like the people at the store, go somewhere else. If you do like them, get the pennies changed into bills. You know who else would hate you if you tried to do this - the people in line behind you. |

You usually would go to a bank to cash in a large amount of coins but if they are rolled up it would be better for the store to except them. The answer is a business can deny you service on any reason they see fit. If you are not wearing shoes they want let you in and that's mainly because of broken glass on the floor or other health reasons. |

probably depending on who you get if you count them right in front of them if they're ***** yes they will refuse them. or hand a roll of them |

Depends what you are buying really, if you are buying a car, and you pay for it in one dollar bills, i think you would probably be turned down
But if you buying candy for a dollar and you only had it in one cents i think they have to accept it... |

there is a law. 'we reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.' |

if the pennies are all wrapped then any store should accept them. but there are stores who will take unwrapped pennies. you can't take a tv show to be used as the law. they exaggerate to the hilt, barnone. |

Stop watching so much tv & no they don't A business owner the right to refuse any 1 or type of payment. |

Actually, I have been told by car salesman that they will take the money as long as it is legal. They work on commission and want the sale. If a business is foolish enough to refuse pennies, well that is their business. I hope the next people who own the business are smarter. |
