i cashed a check from a company i worked for & they gave me my money & later found out it bounced. isnt the company who wrote me the check responsible?why are they looking to me for their money when the check bounced was from a company not me!i didnt bounce that check -it wasnt from my checking account.right??

While in theory it SHOULD be the check "writer"...it is common practice in the banking industry to pursue the person who received the cash. This is why almost everyone these days requires you to have a bank account with them to cash it-- they can zap that money right back out when it becomes NSF.

The reason is that the original person didn't write the check to THE CHECK CASHING PLACE, they wrote it to you. The check place wants their money back from you and its up to you to pursue the original check bouncer for the fees + original account information.

It bites...it really does, but it's how it works. That's also how all those "nigerian scams" get going--- the bank isn't going to try and recover the funds from fraudulent money orders sent from nigeria-- they're going to get the money back from you and YOU have to recover it.

YOU are. That check cashing facility doesn't recognise the issuer of the check. You brought it to them for cashing, you are the one to whom they gave the money, so when it bounces and they are out of pocket, it is to you that they are legally entitled to turn to be made whole. After that, it is now your turn to go after the party that stiffed you. Good luck.

Did you sign a form at the cashing place that said you would assume responsibility? Are you sure it bounced, or are they lying to you?

Don't deal with it call them and tell them to call the company and find out why it bounced and what you can do.

yes - if someone else wrote and sign a check to you and you cashed it - you are out of the loop. You didn't write the check.

its the companys fault, but you will also be charged a bounced check fee.....If you wrote check out after the deposit was made they will keep bouncing if the money isnt there to cover...

When dealing with third party checks you are responsible.
