If a tree falls down, and no one's there to hear it, does it make a sound?
I've had trouble with this question and I hope someone has the answer to it.

betillo
I does. The fact that there is no one there to verify an event doesn't mean the event is not going to happen. Reality is not bound to us; we are bound to reality

when a tree falls, it sends vibrating waves into the air. If someone is there, then the waves hit the person's eardrum and make sound. If no one is there, then the vibrations dissipate and vanish. So, if you're willing to accept vibrations as sound, then yes, it makes a sound when nobody's there.

Of course it makes a sound. Just because no one is around to hear it, that doesn't mean it doesn't make a sound.

Fed_UP_with_work.
This is a classic question about perception determining reality - the argument being that if no consciousness is present to experience the sound, there is no sound.

Scientifically, you could argue that since "sound" is vibration, and you could place an instrument such as a sensitive seismograph near the site of a potential fall and wait for a fall, the vibrations would be measured, indicating sound. But the philosophers who argue questions like this one would probably respond something in the vein of "But since the seismograph is your perception, you're really perceiving evidence which causes the sound to exist in the past."

It's really a question with no right answer, just something fun to argue like "how many angels fit on the head of a pin?" But if you really want to get your head twisted about sideways, try this one on:

Perceive the world as a bubble,
Perceive the world as a mirage,
If you see the world in this way,
You render the Lord of Death powerless.

Just try seeing the entire world around you, including your senses and body, as intransient or non-existent...you'll need some serious drinking or something to get you back in shape.

if ron white tells another joke, and no one is there to hear it, does he still suck?

texandc2002
the difference is sound vibrations and sound. I think the old saying is does it make a noise? Noise is interpreted sound waves by an individual so no Noise.

meallad
yes, because if you would have been there, you would have heard it

Yes. It makes a crackling crash and burn sound just like the one Bush will make when he gets impeached.

Yes, a sound is made by the by the mass of the tree falling and separating the air mass, thereby causing an unsettling circumstance which we call noise once it comes into contact with the ground surface.
