Of course. Just because there are no ears to pick up the vibrations doesn't mean they are not there. |

Sweetask

sure there just wouldnt be anyone around to hear it.And you wouldnt know it fell. |
|

Harley

Definitely.
Sound isn't reliant on someone being there to hear it. |
|

yes, it will make a sound but it's not going to be noise in anybody's ears. |

Sound travels at 190 feet per second. Anyone can hear it as aslong as the environment is not blocking the pathway of the sound. If there many blocking things around, like trees, the refined air a.k.a. sound will be blocked and may not be heard from far away areas. |

Yes. there would be a cracking noise and then it would say "oh no, oh no, OHH NOOO!!!!" and then there'd be a large thumping sound and then the tree would say "****!! I was afraid that was gonna happen!" |
|

:) interesting. but yes, it does make a sound. a huge, resounding 'THUDDD' and echoes through the forest, vibrations that make birds from other trees fly and scatter.
Now.. even if nobody was around to hear it, how would the effects of that sound be there... (ie. movement and scattering of other creatures)?
By the way, what is your take on this? |

Of course. I got a harder one, your on a new world. It has colors we have never seen. What do they look like? |

No... |
|

bigtalltom
|
no. to have sound there needs to be a receiver of the noise waves which the falling tree generated.
Of course, I guess the other trees in the forest could count as receivers... |

Only God knows the answer to that one! The only way we would know is if we were there to hear it, but then it wouldn't work would it?? x |

yes it still makes a sound even tho i have always wondered this question my self i know that the answer is yes it still makes a sound |
|

p.g
|
Nope, it would wait for some days until somebody got close enough to it and THEN it would start whining how much the fall hurt :-) |

This question was put before physics knew about sound waves... This means that, I think, we would have to rephrase the question to:
If there is a soundwave and no one picks it up is it still a sound??
My answer is: I do not know, my mind says at the same time YES and NO and that feels nice... |

It is not a simple question. We need more information to answer the question. What kind of tree is it? What is the size and shape of the tree. What about the forest? Big or small? And are there any animals in the forest. Is the undergrowth dense or barren? Are there mountains around, and are there anyone in those? See, you will have to provide more detail to your question. Is in day or night? Is there someone that can see the tree fall without hearing it fall. See what I mean? |

yes of course |

it will not make the sound until u hear it |

Now really think about this question:here is the answer, which is just plain common sense when you give it some thought...of course it would makes sound. Why wouldn't it? Just because someone isn't there to hear it,doesn't mean it won't make any noise. Trust me on this one. |
