If a tree fell in the woods, but no one was there to hear the sound, does it actually make a noise?

jodraven03
According to Berkeley, something only exists if it can be perceived (esse est percipi). Berkeley believed "minds" -- like yours or mine -- perceive things as well as God. He assumed that God exists. Therefore, Berkeley would say that since God perceived (heard) the sound, that it existed.

tabby90
Yes. The question assumes only humans can hear. Certainly there were plenty of other things in the woods to hear it.

I believe that the connundrum you are looking for is "if a tree falls in a forest and there is no one to hear, does it make noise?" This is referential connundrum which has a semantic argument from a philological perspective (it is also an interesting exercise in logic and epistemology, if you want to take it that far). There is a scientific perspective as well, but that is less interesting.

From a philological perspective, one looks at the connundrum and analyzes the semantic elements. For example, "noise". This implies that vibrations are created, that if one were present to receive, would be perceived as noise. However, the question provides one a referential postulate based on the absence of a person (no one is generally inferred to mean a person).

Well, other creatures can also hear. So, that makes an interesting problem. If we accept that the motion, collisions and other factors create the condition for sound, one then wonders if it is necessary from a referential perspective to have an observer of the event in order for the vibrations to qualify as sound, since the uninterpreted vibrations are just vibrations.

So, in my opinion, if a tree falls in the forest and there is nothing there to perceive the vibrations, no there is no sound. It depends on the interpretation of noise or sound. which I maintained only exists in the presence of someone or something capable of perceiving it as such.

I know it did because I called my wife at home from my cell phone and told her to leave the phone off the hook. When I got home, I listened on the phone to my cell phone I left out in the woods. That afternoon there was a big wind storm and the tree came crashing down. Fortunately my cell phone was uninjured and the loud noise the tree made on my home phone would convince even a doubting Thomas that physics works every time.

I did not laugh ... Nothingness... ... Such a question is noticeably multifarious. I would be shocked if Jesus himself could discover a plausible statement for your query. ... That is a genuinely rigid question, mon ami.

If a tree falls and no one is around to hear it then how do you know it really fell?

Wow. Some of you people are really NOT bright.

You've already answered this question.

Yes, because sound waves were created and other creatures would hear it.

Xenu.net
A tape recorder would solve this.

Modern day science suggests that if something is true everywhere you can observe it, it is probably true everywhere you can't. Hence we believe that a galaxy millions of millions of light years away will be made of the same stuff our galaxy is.

Using the same logic, if the laws of physics apply and a sound is generated when you observe it, then it will occur when you aren't there too!

TheSmartass
Why wouldn't it?

mommy_taytay
nobody can answer that cuz noone knows you would assume it did, but maybe it landed on something really soft the world will never know
