It isn't as safe as using Paypal but many still don't use PP - I guess its all a matter of trust, check their feedback rating and that will give you a good indication. You could also send the cheque/postal order recorded delivery.

People don't always like to use paypal - they may only have one bank account, which a different ebay account is linked to, or may not want to pay paypal charges.
I wouldn't worry about it. Check his rating and what people have said - that will show if he's trustworthy.
Postal orders are quicker than cheques as most ebayers won't send your goods until they are cashed.

I have used Ebay on a regular basis, but cancelled my PayPal Account as it was costing me too much! It was fine while I was using it all the time, but not having used it for over a year, I was still being charged for the convenience!

I would check out his rating. There is a difference between cancelling PayPal and it not being convenient. If he has a low rating, it could be that he was refused a PayPal account in the first place - then I would be worried!

If it is a small sum, then it is probably worth the risk. By far the vast majority of people on Ebay are honest! If it is a large sum, then be a bit more careful - and perhaps ask the seller a question, letting him/her know your concerns.

I have been 'caught' twice on Ebay. One was in my very early days and from an oriental chap - I didn't get my money back because I didn't follow the rules or know what to do at the time. The second time was with a car dealer - and thankfully I made my payment by credit card - and the credit card company got the money back for me. Neither of them are allowed to trade on Ebay anymore! My Ebay ID is Tharp1955 if you want to take a look at what I have done. Most people are honest and don't want to have bad feedback! Go with your gut feeling (or if you are close enough, why not meet and transfer cash and goods at a convenient place? Good luck!

Cheque is better as your bank then has a record to confirm the money has actually been paid. Getting confirmation of a postal order can take forever and eBay has time limits for resolving issues and reviewing disputes.

If the seller's feedback is good and fairly substantial you probably don't need to worry. But you might like to do the following:

ask the seller to confirm safe receipt of the cheque

check when the goods will be sent out (it should be as soon as the cheque clears, but you need to be sure the seller won't delay in banking it)

get them sent recorded delivery or insured, just to be on the safe side.

I've made cheque and PO payments on eBay without a problem. I prefer Paypal just because it's faster, but if your seller has a good record you should be OK.

I'm an eBay seller --- I only accept payment through PayPal or western union is the buyer prefers it.

Read his feedbacks...If it's less than 2, forget it. If he has more than 5 feedbacks, go for it.

Try talking to him over the phone first to see if he's for real.

I have paid by cheque on Ebay before, just make sure the seller is reputable and has good feedback scores

Postal Order probably safer, you will have to let him know your address so that you can receive item.

If item is for small amount I don't think a problem. Do keep any emails he sends you requesting such payment.

Is his feedback good? If he is new with only 1 feedback I would wait and ponder a bit.

If his listing said he will accept Paypal keep insisting on that.

Best answer
paypal everytime
if say the item never arives and the sell has done a runner with ur money paypal just refund you
but if you send a cheque once it is cashed you have lost your money

only paypal it also works out about a week quicker as for a cheque you have to post it (2-3days) the youi have to wait for it to clear(4-5days) then you have to wait for the seller to post it

Do not worry too much. Most of ebayer ask for paying cheques or postal order instead of paying by paypal because they are trying to avoid paypal fee. In my opinion, you should check his/her feedback of selling things, if the feedback percentage is high, It is ok. But the best choice for you to pay them, it is paypal method. Thank you. Good Luck!

I would have thought Paypal would be more convinient but a cheque should be just as safe as long as you get proof of posting
