This is controlled, so that you can go overdrawn and get hit with bank charges, but not enough that its going to cause any problem for the bank with regards to getting their money back.
If you have bank charges, you can claim them all back. The site below is free to use, and shows you how to claim your charges back in 6 easy steps. All the steps are explained in detail, with template letters you can fill your details in and send to the bank. |

No, the question is, if you have a debit card and no overdraft, why are you spending more than you have? The responsibility is yours, not the banks! It's just like a checking acount, you keep track of your balance and you don't go over. |

1/ So that you're not embarrassed by a refused payment for insufficient funds
2/ They trust you enough for this
3/ They make you pay
All in all it's a good, if expensive, thing |

Just so they can charge you for it. They do it all the time and charge you ridiculous amounts for going overdrawn by so little. That's how banks make their money. |

Banks love people who overspend so they can charge them more for not having enough money. I have a rechargeable debit card through MC. If I try to spend too much the card is declined. The only way I can have an overdraft, ONCE, is by using it as a credit card or if the service charge uses up the balance. I just have to get a positive balance again.
Most banks allow online checking of your balance. YOU are the one who has to keep track of your spending, just as if you used a checkbook. It would be nice if your bank would simply not allow an overdraft and refuse the card if there was not enough money. Search for a bank that won't allow you to spend more than you have. I doubt you will find one, because that's how they make extra money from poor people. Life isn't fair, no one guaranteed you justice, you have to work and fight for it. |

because they make money out of you by charging you a fee when you go overdrawn, whether it be your fault or not. You need to keep a tight watch on what you spent to avoid this happening again. Alternatively meet with a representative at your local branch and arrange for an overdraft facility to be added to your account. That way if you go overdrawn, but have the money to cover it you have a bit of leeway and you can put the money in the bank. |

They charge you when you go over. Each Bank has its own Overdraft Limit Policy, for example with Bank A you can overdraft by $50 but Bank B only allows you to overdraft by $200.
It's when you go over the limit they have for you- they reject the transaction.
If you do not pay the overdrafted amount the same day (you can usually do it online or by phone) You get charged an Overdraft fee.
However, you can get the overdraft fee removed if you call in customer service and ask to speak to the manager and ask them to remove it as a courtesy. Sometimes it works. |

Because they want to rob you blind.
It is actually in the small print of the terms and conditions of your account. You might clear a cheque then take some money out from a cash machine and this will make you overdrawn and the bank is unable to stop this.
It is YOUR responsibility to make sure the account does not go overdrawn. The bank will charge you a small fortune if it does.
Check your balance and make sure it doesn't. |
