▲ßûІІѕ vş ßèāŗѕ▼ | If my parents have debt (medical bill) and passed away..? |
am I responsible for the remaining debt automatically even if I've never signed anything regarding financial responsiblity (USA)? |
|

tkquestion

Nope! What happens is, if your parents should have any asset, the creditors has the first dib on them. You get what's left. If your parents does not have the sufficent asset and creditors aren't fully repaid, that is their problem. They will have to write them off. They can not come after you or your assets.
Now, that doesn't mean they won't try to collect from you. In fact, they will try.... but you still are not obligated to solve their problem. |

This is a question for a lawyer or legal aid staff. Most likely the estate would have to be sold to satisfy the debt--their home, vehicles, any savings, investments or life insurance, furniture, and so on, right down the line. |

The estate is responsible for the debts; any and all. So, if there are credit card bills outstanding, loans, mortgages, medical bills, etc., etc. the estate will have to clear them before the remaining assets go to the beneficiaries of the will. Oh, yeah, there better be a will. |

No but their estate is. |

Sorry to hear about you parents.
No one is responible for anyone else past due bill unless you co-signed for them, such as student, car, and private loans and others.
With the passing of your parents the only way that you are responable for their debts is if they left you something in the will if they had one. I would go and find out from a lawyer and see what you opitions are as far as that is, depending on the state or town that you are fro you might be able to sure them for making you pay some else bills with permission. |

You are not since you stated that you did not co-sign, but their estate (if any) will be.
You cannot "leave your debt to your children" in this manner, the debt would be written off if your parents estate did not cover all outstanding bills. |

You should be fine, it isn't your financial responsibility. If anything the hospital will go after the estate. The executor of the estate will need to address. |

I believe so, that's why so many people get life insurance. You leave your debt to your children. I believe that they wont make you pay for it as long they can sell your parent's cars, house and other large ticket items. I've also heard of them doing auctions to pay off debts, if it still leaves some, the family pays for it. That is what happened to a friend of mine whose parents died, she lived in PA. |

Greenbay All the Way!!!!!
|
thats not always the case,, places like that will void the bill sometimes, but it also depends on what the will states |
