therefore, $6.50 / 2 = $3.25.
But that's not the final answer....gotta add the sales tax!
The tax will be applied to the $3.25 amount. If your tax is 5%, then multiply the amount of the sale - here $3.25 - by .05, which equals a tax of 17 cents, cuz they always round up.
So the final amount, in this example, is $3.25 + $.17 =

Take this example if something is 10 dollars, but has a discount of 70%, you take 10 multiple it by the 70% or .70 and you get 7 dollars, however that is the discount price so you subtract it from the original price of ten...and you're left with a price of $3. The most common interpretation is: Take 50% off the marked price, and if the marked price is $6.50, then $3.25 is of course the answer.
Secondly, if the ticket says the marked price (or ticketed price) is 50% off (already), then you will pay $6.50.
Then there's Ben P's interpretation: If the ticketed price has already been marked down 50% from the original price to $6.50, the Questioner wants to know what was the original price before the markdown??? This interpretation yields an answer of $13.00. ($6.50 / .50 = $13.00).

when shopping in stores the easiest way to calculate these things in your head is just to divide the whole dollar amount into two, in this case, six into 2 is 3, then worry about the change: half of 50 cents is 25 cents. so you get $3.25 |

that would be how to do any decimal multiplication, but quick easy way to do this one is just to know that half of $6.50 is $3.25. But anyway when you multiply decimals you add all the amount of numbers after the decimal point,from both figures, and count from the right end- and that's where the decimal point goes. a percent is a 100th. So 50% is .50 or 50 100ths.
Also, to answer your question as asked: if it's $6.50 and it's 50% off, it's $6.50. It was $13.00. |
