If the company you work for is bought by another company, do you have to?

If the company was taken over TUPE legislation you have more rights, but legally you have to take the courses they offer, providing they are paying you for your time.

Thanks to the lack of support of the main trade unions a few years back you are now in the position where the firm or new owners can do pretty well what they want with the staff

You reap what you sow

I do believe so. The new company can also eliminate employees that worked for the company that was bought out. I have seen that happen all too many times. :(

When your company is bought out sometimes it has little effect but most times it turns everything upside down.

Mind your P's & Q's or you'll be out on the street.

any courses paid for by the company add to your cv. you'd be silly to not go on them. cleaner or md. its a matter of sense.

well I would say Yes because new companies should issue new terms and conditions.

Coolman
It depends on the terms and agreements between the both companies when they completed the transaction.

I would say yes if she wants to keep her job.
the courses could have HEALTH & SAFTY issues.

Barbarian
This is more complicated. Your employment rights transfer, but you may be asked to sign new terms and conditions. Courses would be a different matter as if you say no then you are not meeting the standards set.

Liam M
Unless you are covered by a contract (like a union contract) chances are you employment is "at will". That means you can quit or they can fire you for any reason or no reason.
