I took the dog home called the police and give them all the circumstances,as well as the info on the dogtags.The police found the ownner,charged him.They said I could take the dog to the spca,or keep him untill the owner decides what to do I hope he never calls.Did I do the right thing?

When I said took the dog,I meant that I took the leash from this JERK .I took out my cell phone and told this JERK that I was calling the police,he took off,leaving the dog with me,the dog was medium size,a mix of some kind.As soon as his owner was gone he started licking me and was very playful. I waited for the police to arrive,they took the info from the dogtags,and then suggested I take him to the aspca,Idid,told them what had happened.I then gave them my phone number ,told them I was taking the dog with me,they said they would call me if they heard from the owner.So far so good. |

yes, but risky. I would have just called the police. Without evidence or witnesses, you could have been charged with theft...don't know your circumstances. |

Abuse in any form is wrong. and to an alamal it is worse.If you see somone abusing a anamal you should report it and take action to save the anamal YES. anamals have only one emotion and that is love. So when somone os abusing them it is a real sin. I feel that if a person puts a dog on a real short teather they should be treated the same. |

In this day and age, I would have called the police and waited until they arrived. You do not mention the type of dog. Some dogs will attack to protect their master, notwithstanding the cruelty aspect. It is a sad state of affairs but that's how I see it and how I would advise others. Finally, well done. I hope you get to keep him and he grows to give you many, many years of friendship. |

As long as you do not end up in court for taking the dog then yes - you did the right thing. However it gets tricky when you go to taking things that belong to people. The court system is wierd and I have no trust in it sometimes. |

We need more people just like you, I would say if you are going to do things like that, be sure you have some mace or something, and you can take care of yourself, we don't need to lose a good soul in these troubled times. Soemone has to speak out for the animals because they are unable to speak out for themselves.

this is a misdemeanor crime....I've learned this by watching ANIMAL COPS on the animal planet channel. these people are cuffed & booked...they get heavy crimes & sometimes pretty lengthy jail sentences. AND THEY DESERVE...which leads me to the OBVIOUS answer....call the Police AND the SPCA! I think some places are even getting laws enacted now that if you witness abuse & don't report it, you can also be held liable [if not, they should]...do what you KNOW you have to do .....report the s-n of a b---h! |

I don't even really like dogs BUT I would have probably done the same thing depending on the type of abuse(you never know, if he could do it to an animal!). I definitely would have said something to the owner and made it aware to the authorities. And don't feel bad about it, if you seen some of the types of abuse I have seen on television you know you may have saved the pup from something much worse once he/she was out of the public view. |
