Yes, under certain conditions (and depending on local laws and policies), such as:
- Documented long history of misuse of the 911 system (intentional false alarms, for example)
- An address known to be dangerous to the rescuers
- Low priority calls when the system becomes backlogged
- etc.
They can also do things like slower responses to known annoying addresses, and other little tricks to deal with some kinds of callers.
Finally, in some localities, misuse of the 911 system can result in tickets, fines, or even jail time. |

In a bad neighborhood, or if a household abuses it, they just never show up. Remember the group Public Enemy? "911 a joke in your town." The Simpsons also did a spoof when the cheif gave the "real" emergency number. Sometimes they just never show up. |

When you call 911, it should be an emergency. As Madkins007 pointed out, there are many situations in which the response may be delayed or cancelled due to the situation at hand. Just because you call and they come, doesn't mean that you get what you want. The people who respond when you call, the Dipatchers, Police, Firefighters, Paramedics, and EMT's are professionals who are trained to evaluate each situation and take appropriate action. What might seem like an emergency to you (cat up a tree, lost your keys down the sewer drain) might not meet the community standards for emergency. Please only use 911 for life threatening emergencies. |
