In what kinds of stores do you feel tip jars are appropriate?

coffee shops and cafes.

Cosmotologists, Bartenders, Waitstaff, Caddies, Delivery Guys, Paper Boys, Door Service People, Bell Boys, Maid Service, and other people who do personal service for you. When someone makes you a cup of coffee, or makes you a sandwich that is their job, I don't tip them.

Jinx
Somewhere that you are receiving a service by more then one person, other then a Dress or clothing shop.

mountainwindcat
Any job that is in the service industry in which the one who serves you does not get a tip at the end of payment.

You don't have to leave a tip, but a jar shouldn't hurt anyone.

I do agree with Nancy & T. H. BUT I think I would have to side with chslaw, utah.dustin, mrscmckim & advancedmaster.
To me, a tip jar is not classy. If you feel someone deserves a tip, just tip them. A tip jar is like asking for a tip, not classy.

Also, a tip jar is usually split between a few people. So if you are tipping one person b/c they did a great job that person won't even fully benefit from the tip in the tip jar because they have to split it with others. That's Not fair. Tip only the person that deserves it. This way the person you are tipping will remember you and always take care of you properly & promptly. It's more personal.

First, I agree with devon. In a fancy restaurant, the tip is given to the waiter/waitress. A tip jar should be put out in places where a person is not served by a waiter- coffee shops, pizza places, etc, especially places that are a combo pizza/italian restaurant place. Hope this helps!

Sammi
Coffee shops, corner stores (like 7-Eleven), and, not so much a store but, people playing music.

I'd say like Coffe Shops and cafes because they basically serve you like a resturant but because its so laid back and peaceful u can't really consider it a real resturant.

Grocery stores...

mrscmmckim
I don't feel it is appropriate for a tip jar to be put out at any store where you are not personally served at the table. The staff at these places make minimum wage or better where wait staffs make a much lower wage which is supposed to be made up for by the tips.

I find it offencive to feel compelled to give a tip to someone who is just doing their job for full wages. But, I am very generous to those on wait staff wages because they have to hustle for their money.

Tips jars are NEVER appropriate. Waitstaff get "tips" because they only get paid 2.25 per hour and the tip is based on sales. If you get minimum wage or more you DO NOT GET TIPS unless someone decides to do it. Tip jars are EXTORTION!!!!!

CarlosTheHoosier
Tip jars should only be used where a person is not personally served by someone. If you have a server (waitress, bellhop, hair stylist) the tip should go directly to them. The only places that come to mind would be a tavern (tips for bartenders, not waiters), and performers (pianist in a club).

I've seen them in coffee shops and pizza joints.

I wish the whole tipping system would go away and service employees just receive a fair wage.

I think that tip jars should be at all dining places, excpet for drive throughs. I mean, you won't be able to put money in a jar while you're in a car, if you know what I mean. I also think tip jars should be in places where they have service, like Home and Office Depot. I don't really agree with the subways, since if its outside, everyone wants to get to the place where they want, and they won't have time to put money. If it's inside. Most people want to sit down. Another that comes to mind are hotels. Hotels might have individual jars for the maids and stuff? Just an opinion on the hotels, for I've never seen on in hotels.

I think any kind of small resterant or Starbucks are okay. But not for like clothing stores or anything like that. That's too over the top.

I think that any store where the associate provide information beyond just selling the product should have a tip jar. If the associate goes the extra mile to making your shopping experience wonderful should be allowed to receive a tip. associates should not ask for tips though.
