Whatever you get, it's a gift and should be appreciated and not expected. I think 1000 is a little much - what does a 12 year old need so much money for? But, that's just my perspective. If you are saving it for something worthy, then who cares if your parents can afford 100, 1000 or 10000? |

as much as they give you. you can choose not to spend it an place the money in a savings account or on a cd. just remember the well might run dry and no more $1000 birthdays. |

Very fortunate--a bush family member? Well, don't worry about it bankrupting the donors, they're already busy stealing more :))) |

That's ridiculous! Why? LOL Yes, that is way too much money for a 12 year old. If you bought a gift that cost $1000.... like maybe a laptop or purse, whatever! That would be bad enough but money? Dont you buy gifts? Money is so impersonal.... |

I think they should get about 10-20 Dollars and the rest should be put in a Savings Account for them until they are 18 years of Age . Giving them all that Money is teaching them to be Spoilt Little Brats. |

Those that say it's way too much, it veries according to each family. You could also argue about how much one receives in allowance each week.
The only thing I don't get is why you get so much for your siblings bday.
Other than that $1,000 is fine as long as most of it saved. There really shouldn't be a limit on how much one receives for his or her bday; it should be up to the family and independent of how much a friend gets.
As for me, I always saved almost all of the money that I received as gifts. By the time I was almost 17, I sold all of my stocks and mutual funds that my family had bought me when I was younger. I took that money and all of the money I had in savings and began to invest my own money in the stock market. I've been fortunate to have turn a rather nice return since then.
As to say what the limit should be for a child to receive on his or her bday should vary accordind to how well they could manage the money. |

Depends on what you plan to do with it and are your parents able to give you such a generous present. |

The question is what are you doing with all the money? Saving it or throwing it to the wind? You should save as much of the money as possible and be allowed to spend a little on something practical. Many parents do not know sound financial advice so therefore many children are lacking too. Put the money away for college expenses, emergencies, a home or car. You will be thankful you started saving at a young age, the time goes by quickly. Learn to save smarter at a young age, you can be a Multi Millionaire at a young age if you invest your money correctly. Best Wishes and God Bless! |

first if that is there first time getting that high amount then that is bad but if you start with low amounts and keep on going up and seeing how they progress with maturity and responsibility with the money then that is a good amount i guess or u should just give the money for something they wanted for theyre birthday |

why would they give you cash and not buy you a gift valued at that price. I bought my daughter a $800 quad for her 6th birthday last year. I couldn't imagine giving her $800 cash.
Save most and spend the rest on something you really want. |

You bet it is too much. More appropriate would be $50. You probably have absolutely no idea what to do with $1,000, and I don't mean buying some stupid video or computer games, iPods, Blackberrys or any such similar waste of time. If you got $1000 before what do you have to show for it? Chances are if this is not the first time you have nothing left, and it was all wasted on senseless things.
I'm not about to tell you what you should do with the money because most likely you would not be the least bit interested and it is not something you would ever do anyway. At the very least, you should try not to become a spoiled brat.
$1,000 can disappear pretty fast in the hands of someone who cannot handle it. |

I really hate my job...

I think you should make kids earn their money, unless you just want a bunch of spoiled-rotten people in the world. |
