It has been for the last decade, all the work has gone abroad for less money which is understandable if you run a business. The Government are to blame for out pricing the UK in this market, we are not an attractive proposition for people !! :) |

since the 70s yes, most jobs are now either in the finacial or service industries as manufacturing has been moved to India, China etc where its much cheaper |

The biggest issues that are faced by UK manufacturing are all down to cheaper competition abroad. China's manufactuing industry is booming, as is India and many of the old Eastern Block countries. It is very difficult to compete against these markets with their low wages and overheads.
We also have a skills gap now because of lack of investment in training during the 80's and 90's. Many of our skilled engineers have gone to work abroad. I've seen this myself first hand. |

I wish it was.
In fact there has been a deliberate policy for decades of dismantling British industry permanently and replacing it with a "knowledge based economy". That's why developments such as Canary Wharf have sprung up; they are there to attract the world's super-rich businessmen.
The problem is that if you are not one the 00.1% of people who have a full University education and a career in the world of finance, you are basically scr*wed.
The theory is that because there is so much money to be made in simply moving money around, the rich will become so rich that the "excess profits" will trickle down to the poor.
Bizarre. I've never heard of anyone being so rich that they would simply give money away. |

An honest answer is that the manufacturing sector has been in recession since the late 1960's!!!
Services, Retail, Pharmaceuticals, Licensing and Technology is where the money is.
Alan Sugar was well ahead of his time, producing all those stereo's, Tv's and Computers over in Hong Kong in the 70's and making profits of ÂŁ150m, while all the old school ties and crap businessmen were still trying to make things in England and consequently went to the wall.

MANUFACTURING IS IN DECLINE ALL OVER THE WESTERN SIDE OF THE WORLD!!!! THE TREND IS FOR PRODUCTS TO BE MANUFACTURED IN THE FAR EAST, IT'S CHEAPER AND IT MAKES SENSE TO ANY BUSINESSMAN WITH BRAINS.......STOP BLAMING THATCHER FOR ALL YOUR PROBLEMS, GET SOME PROZAC AND HAVE A LIFE.
I am really shocked with the amount of people who still live in England (the first industrialised country in the world) and don't have even the most basic grasp of business, supply and demand and profit. Peopl like Mick need to go to business school and learn that profit is good not evil and that industry changes all the time. Car building is largely unprofitable but retailing on the whole is 5 times as profitable. That is not Thatcher or anyone else's fault, Its called a trend and it's why we have things like DVD's and not VHS anymore. The world moves on and wants different things.
Politcians do not control business and nor should they. Market forces do.
Can anyone get that??? Is that too difficult to understand??? |

Britain went completely to pot when thatcher (no she's not even gonna have a capital letter to start her name) came in to power - closed the mines - the shipbuilders cut backs, cut backs, cut backs. Took away the unions messed the country up in general really. Oh and war. Lets go to war. Were not gonna build any more ships but f*** it lets go boys. WAR!! We like our tiny weeny little bit of Britain in the middle of nowhere, that nobody ever really knew existed.
I personally watched those poor sod's go out of the harbour's mouth in Portsmouth. I watched them come back too. Not the Sheffield - not the coventry.
A survivor off one of the 'hit' ships told me that he was taking a dump when the missile hit. It hit the ops room, where he was suppose to be. He got trooped for living instead of being blown up.
Anyway thanks to maggie Britain will never be the same. The rest have just followed. Is there actually a British car manufacturer in Britan now - maybe rover - i really dont know?? |
