Is it best (easier) to start a non-profit organization of a regular business?

cosaxteacher
It is actually easier to start a "regular" business because there is less government oversight on it. Since there are many financial benefits to filing as a non-profit, it is harder to get that determination and to keep it.

Let me see Should It is easy

Starting a regular C-Corporation is easiest. All you need to do is file a few papers in your local juristiction and pay some fees and you're done. Of course, copyright and trademark searches should be done and a lawyer consulted if you aren't sure of anything. There are online resources. Search on forming corporation.

That is a tough question. you know if you want to do everything by the book - there are so many rules and regulations here.

Anybody would do most wisely in going to the chamber of commerce (kamer van koophandel) in person and make an appointment there.

They have to look at so many different things before they vcan help you answer that question. There is no general rule for this - absolutely not.

I'm confused you cannot be both non-profit and regular. You must be one or the other and it is harder to be non-profit because you have to prove non-profit certification. And really you don't get to choose. If you are in it to make money you are for profit. If you are in to give 80% of you money away then you are non profit. Non profits work off "in-kind" money, money given to them from grants or other businesses as a charity. You have to log all this info. to show where every penny of the money goes to show you are truly not making a profit.

Strawberrieluver
Well thats up to you. A regular business you would be making profit. And in a non profit org. you would not be making profit, I guess just helping others.

I agree. A regular business is easier. You can get all the information you need to start a regular business by going to http://www.sba.gov

They have links that tell you how to start a business, how to apply for a business loan or grant, and they can get you in touch with a mentor to help you get started.

It really depends on your Non-profit. It looks better for you if you start your business practices and keep them *perfect* for a few years- all of your accounting, services, business plan needs to be accounted for and followed through. There are quite a few things that go with starting a NonProfit- and you have to register with the IRS, obtain a nonprofit status which costs money to apply. You have to have immaculate records, they don't play if they think your organization is dirty.

Best advice- to really decide why you want to start a non-profit because in the end it will cost you more time and more money than you may have originally thought.

Starting a normal business is the only way you will ever really make money unless you are set up to pay every member of your staff by a percentage of the donations and your contributors MUST be made aware of that fact. You can not accept donations large enough to really do any good unless you are Chapter 503(c) classified by the IRS.

Best of Luck!

Yes it is easier!

the only way to make money in a non-profit organization is to do illegal things. I would say a regular business
