Is it illegal for retailers to sell an item above the maufacturer's suggested retail price?

No, it's not, since it is their property they can sell it for however much they want; though this situation is different with cars.

Though if a seller is gouging the customer for more than the MSPRP of a product, notifying the manufacturer might prove some interesting results. they might reduce the amount of that item to that store or cut it off altogether for making their products look over-priced.

No thats not illegal. The can charge whatever they want. The price is just a suggestion.

leonard s
no that why it's called maufacturer's suggested retail price

jimmy
Why not ? It is 'suggested' only.... However, if the retailer sells above the market price, and much more than the other retailers, who wants to buy from him ?

No it's not retailers have the right to sell a manufacturers product any amount they want

Tiff S
Nope. Stores do it all the time. The suggested retail price is usually only used when an item is on sale or being discontinued.

Cassie K
NO. It is PERFECTLY Legal. The Suggested Retail Price is EXACTLY that .... a SUGGESTION. Sports Authority (a local shoe store) is so bold about it that they don't even take off the MSR tag & they still charge you more.

The MSR is usually posted to retailers so they know what the customer would pay if they went online or anywhere else. But you have to pay shipping if you order online.

Stores have to pay for their own shipping & carry all their overhead - so they can charge as much as they want. That is why most stores price match - so you don't go somewhere else just for a few dollars less.

As an employee of a small Manufacturing business it really sucks - because I get a clear view of how much it REALLY cost to actually make something. We make it for $7.00 - we sell it to our Wholesale customers (the stores) for $14.00 and they sell it retail (the customer) for $28.00!! IT'S INSANE!!

rtfm
No, of course not. That's why it's called the "manufacturer's suggested" price instead of the "legally binding maximum" price.

A store can sell an item for anything their customers are willing to pay for it.
