Is it legal for a local video rental store....?
...to charge me over $300 in late fees because I didn't return the movie on time? Before I go into the store to dispute and try and get the amount due reduced, I'd like to know all my options. Thanks in advance.

just check the agreement u and the store keeper had if u dont have it den ask sone else who rented the movies from that shop and ask him how much do they pay for over time if its remain the same den u have to pay it but if not argue him and bargain it but if u would buy onw your on movie it would help u alot

Resqualle
Well it is on the contract that you will pay all fees. You can't do much about it, just ask for the amount the interest has increased the original amount.

that really sucks. but they can get you with that fine print bs. be careful, but depending on what they say you could probably fight it

depends on their late return policy and howmany movies you had out. blockbuster has if its so many days late, they just charge you the price of the movie, and you keep it. You have to read all that little itty bitty fine print before you do anything now a days.

WhiskeyGuy
You probably signed a contract that allows them to charge you that much. Most movie stores will let you just pay for the cost of the movie. However, if they insist on charging you that much, maybe just consider returning the movie and never going to that movie place again (hopefully you have others). I've done that where I live, and my late fee has never came up. Just tell them you can't afford that, and see if they let you buy the movie.

I have had this problem myself. My friend took a rented movie from my house and I didn't know about it. After $ 64 in late charges they took my offer to just replace the DVD. After that I got netflix. You can't go wrong with netflix. Try it out they have a two week trial period, if you don't like it just cancel it, but I bet you'll love it. Legally they can charge you for the amount of days it was late. If you take it to small claims court, the guy will probably say that he could have made that much money(the amount owed) if he had the movie. The judge will most likely order you pay a reduced fee, but it still sucks. Offer to replace the movie if he says no. Let him take the legal action. It will most likely cost him more than you owe, to hire a lawyer. Good Luck

Boots
I think they can charge you for however long you have it. Call a lawyers office. They may can only charge you the actual cost of the movie, but they can turn it over to the prosecuting attorney's office for theft of property.

Garacaius
No. It is like the library. They never charge you more than the cost of replacement.

According to the stores around here that would mean your movie is more than 100 days late.... in which case I think you could offer to pay for the movie (market price) and keep it. If they dont' accept your offer tell them to blow it out their butt!! Don't go back.

Taurus
You should have read their policy on late returns and their rates. You can also move to another state, change your name, social security number and contact details if you want to avoid paying $300.
