yes it is leagal unless stated otherwise in the lease. Read all the fine print! And yes most of them do want a copy of the keys. Since leagaly it is their property and you are only a renter. However if not stated in lease then go on w your bad self! |

Before you do anything in a home that you are renting, you have to ask the landlord, if you can do it.. |

Not sure, but try it anyway and don't say anything. If the landlord says anything you'll know they're going into your home without your permission. They have to give you 24 hours notice before entering the premises( unless it's and emergencey) |

Yes you can change the locks. I would ask your landlord though just to be on the safe side though. |

You can not legally change the locks on a rented home unless the landlord gives you permission. |

Well, what are they going to do if you change the locks? Arrest you? ha. I would change the locks and not give them a key and see how long it takes them to figure it out. They shouldn't find out at all b/c they should not be going into your residence w/out your permission (unless it's in the lease agreement). Just make sure when you move out to give them the key. |

i dont think its legal because you are renting not buying i think for you to be able to do that you have to request permission from your landlord and i think you would have to provide a key to your landlord. |

I would not think it's legal. The landlord owns the property and has the right Yto enter when necessary. You are simply renting it.
Furthermore, if there is anything wrong with their property, i.e. sink dripping, carpet cleaning, etc. they have to fix it. I think it's beneficial for them to have the keys because if something is wrong, they can come take care of it even when you're not home. |

I am not sure what state you are in and it does vary from state to state, but in most cases you need to give the landlord written notification of any changes you are wanting to make to the property. Once the landlord gives his/her ok you may begin making the alterations. In the case of changing locks the landlord must have a key to the property for insurance purposes. |

Varies by state. In NC it is legal to change the locks. The only time you have to give the landlord the key is when you move. But you do have to allow the landlord access to the property when you are home. |

it really depends on the laws regarding tenancy in the jurisdiction where you live. Also, landlords do have some ability to set their own rules for that. I would say, if it's a house and you know your landlord well enough, then you should respect them. But in an apartment, however illegal it may be, you might just want to change those locks. |
