Is it okay to hold a check for 86 days before cashing it?

If it's a personal check, that is sort of unfair to the person who wrote the check because they will have untouchable funds in their account, if it's paycheck or government issued, it will say on the check how long it is valid.

not advisable

Alyssa Marie's mom
yes but it has to be cashed before 90 days

You've got a six month window to get it to the bank and have the banks honour the transaction.

After that it becomes what is called " stale dated " and the bank will not process the cheque.

It would be necessary to go back to the person who issued it and get it replaced or certified in order to cash it.

It depends on the kind of check you have and the date of maturity ( Date stated on the check). To be sure, ask your bank.

Rachel Z
Depends on the bank. Some may consider that a stale dated check and may refuse it. It isnt overly curtious to the maker.

Why would you?

Bat Thumb
I wouldn't. Know why? If I wrote someone a check (which I haven't since New York got blown up for this very reason), and it didn't clear within, oh, two weeks, I'd stop payment.

Queen
if you are asked to and it is post dated yes

Banks have a choice to honor a personal check after six months. It doesn't technically expire unless the bank has a policy set it in place for that.

But you also run the risk of the bank it is drawn on (i.e. the bank of the person who wrote you the check) to choose to cash it or not and also for the account it is being drawn on to not have enough funds. So you are at the mercy of both the original check writer's availability of funds and both your bank and their bank refusing to honor the check.

While I'm a true believer that it is common courtesy to cash a check written to you as soon as you can, I have no sympathy for people who write checks and either do not stop payment on them or do not account for the funds after a long period of time has gone by without it being cashed. Financial responsibility goes both ways.

If you have held on it this long, at the very least let the person know you intend on cashing it so they are aware of it. Or have them issue you a new check if you are concerned that it won't be valid.

If it is a non-personal check it should have an expiration date printed somewhere on it.

usually checks expire after 6 months, so you should be fine.

Depends on if it is a personal check or a payroll or tax check. Most corporate checks expire after 90 days, but a personal check does not, but you may run into a problem if the funds are insufficient now.

You do have up to six months to cash it but I would give a heads up to whoever wrote it and let them know you havent cashed it yet and you plan on doing so.

It depends. Lots of times if a check isn't cashed it will be void in a certain number of days. Usually 30, 45, 60, or even 90 days.
But this depends on the type of check. Maybe a 2 party check is valid for longer?

If it was written from a person, call them and ask them if it's okay. Just tell them you haven't cashed it yet because you never needed it.
