The only way you could cash it is if they transfered the check over to you (signing a pay check over, allowing you to deposit it but not cash it). Sadly in your situation, the only way the store or you could cash it it would have to be in the appropriate name. The best is to trace the address and contact the assignee. Otherwise you'll just have to bite the costs. |

There's lots of easy ways, but only one honest way, and that is to take it to the bank and explain it.
Any other way could land you somewhere you don't want to be.
If a check is made out to you -- and it's really yours, and the name is misspelled, all you have to do is take it to the bank, identify yourself, endorse the check with the incorrect spelling, and then endorse it with the correct spelling. No problem. |

Checks are only accepted by your bank if the person the check is made out to has endorsed the check. in this case, I'd ask your job to make the check out to the correct name (you might have accidentally gotten someone else's check... just think you might have earned more than what they got paid) |

technically no.
however you can just take it in with all the other cheques and the bank may not care, especially if it's just for a few dollars |

Normally the person who the check is addressed to has to sign the check him or herself in order for it to be accepted. |

I am assuming there is no address or contact info. on the check itself? Depending on the relationship you have with your current bank, you might be able to. You would have to endorse it the way it is written as "Jacob", and then endorse again under that with your name and the account number you hold with the bank. If you make a deposit with several checks at a time, chances are the teller will not scrutinize especially if it is one of the larger bank chains. |

Contact the person that wrote the check and get another one. |

Easy fix: Call the person who wrote it, explain the error and ask them to write another and you will return that one.....
if they give you a hard time: maybe it wasn't really a mistake.
If you cash that one, and that is not your name, you are committing a federal offense.. |

It IS possible. People do it everyday. Some of them are even caught and arrested.
The name and address of the person should be on the check. Contact them and have them come in and write another check. I had someone make a check out incorrectly to my business and they were happy to write me a new check when I explained the error. |

There is a big difference if it was meant to you or if you found that check. You can get to allot of trouble if you cash that check if it wasn't meant for you. If you have a banking account, you can cash it. Just deposit the check outside (noooot inside because then you'll be asked to swipe your card and of course the name on the account is not going to be the same as on the check) and whatever the check amount is take it out just remember it's usually in amount in $20's that you can take out. |

The only way to cash a check that is not in your name is to have a limited power of attorney from the person to whom the check is made payable to.
In your case the check is not made out to anyone that could give you a power of attorney.
It is my opinion that the only way you can receive this money is to ask the person who wrote the check to write you another check in the correct name and cancel the previous check. |
