projectcasey2002 | Is religion used to keep people from rising up against authority? |

I am agnostic and I have a strong dislike for organized religion. I am a history fanatic, also a psychology/sociology major and through that course of study (and my gut feeling/common sense), I came to believe that organized religion (not paganism or necessarily polytheism as they tend to be more of a human response to nature)is and always has been a means of controlling the masses. The promise of a better life after death, the promise of an eternal hellfire for those that don't obey the rules of "God" (which usually favor the powerful and rich), the promise that the meek shall inherit the earth...all ways to ensure complacency and obedience. (Not to mention the wholly unbelievable stories of the bibles of organized religions!!) Many of those have been disproved by modern science and so the Church's stance: alter their position from "The bible is the literal account of historic fact" to "not everything in the bible is meant to be taken literally". The Church shifts it's opinion to suit the facts. It's such a sham in my opinion.
Anyway, check out this thesis and see what you think.
Hope you enjoy it.

No. You're confusing the cart with the horse.
Religion is practiced by people who prefer not to rise against authority, but feel vaguely uncomfortable with abject servility, so they create an all-powerful God under whom it's okay to bow and scrape. The rest of it -- the trappings and rituals and dogma -- they wrap around to make it look more substantial.
Religion doesn't repress people. People repress themselves. |

Not just against authority but to help people be happy. Imagine what would happen if when people die there's no "heaven" to go to? Is also a way of explaining what we don't understand. Is just a mental "crutch". |

Religion is not something to use <--- my opinion |

Well yeah, obviously, all through history. To be in control of the popular religion is to be in control of the people. |

Religion was, at one time, the major "opium" of the masses. The oppressed would "turn the other cheek" rather than rise against their oppressor. They could find comfort in the belief that in death the oppressor would find ultimate punishment. Not to mention the meek shall inherit the earth...yada yada yada.
I believe that some time ago religion was surpassed by capitolism on this front though. With Cable TV, Fast Food, The Internet, our Cell Phones, Electric Toothbrushes and Hairdryers, even those living in poverty have enough valued creature comforts to think twice before doing something to lose them. Moreover, the comfort these objects and possesions provide, create a level of apathy that is frightening.
I was watching Bill Maher last night and they were talking about recent approval ratings. Congress's approval rating is currently at 32%. However, their re-election rate is 99%!! He said those are the kind of numbers we used to laugh at the Kremlin for getting. "There's an honest election -wink-wink-nudge-nudge" but this is what we do.
Very scary stats...
Also, lets remember the only reason our country exists in the first place is that a mob of rich, white, slave owning guys didn't want to pay their taxes.
I think if the founding fathers had microwaves and tivo, we'd all be speaking with delightful British accents. :0)
Hope this Helps,

Religion is what gets people to rise up and not need authority, "When the morays are needed the morays are not sufficient, when they are not needed people rise above the morays" |

I think that religion is often what helps keep people in line. Think about it many people do not commit crimes because they are afraid that God or a higher power is watching them and that they will be punised in the afterlife. |

No. Religion is communism. Christianity is truth. Oh O can't wait to hear the feedback from that statement. If you must be intellectual on your reply, not just call names. I have a goood reason for the statement. |
