Is the current minimum wage satisfactory?

Additional Details
Is it low enough not to put too much stress on business but high enough to satisfy the baseline needs of the employee?

NO!!

I don't see how it can be. If you have even 1 child, rent, utilities, car payment, not to forget insurance, how do you pay all of these, when you make so little. I know get a second JOB and maybe a part-time one too. Then someone else can raise your child. This is the problem, why so many single parents, Mothers and Father end up applying for some kind of public assistance. If the minimum wage was more in line with the cost of living, maybe it wouldn't be so hard to be a single parent, in the United States not living on "Welfare". Just for the record I am not a single parent nor am I on welfare, I just see and understand the problems they face with minimum wage, Thank You.

I live in Texas where the current minimum wage is 5.15 per hour. I don't know how anyone is expected to live on that kind of wage.

teddy_4_bears
No, the minimum wage is alot lower than the growth of most citys or towns.

It is sad that the minimum wage has stayed below $6.00 for many years while the Congress continues to vote itself a pay increase every year. There are so many people in this country fighting for their economic lives each day and yet the government continues to ignore and respond to questions with the usual political rhetoric. Give me someone in Congress who is not afraid to fight for the right of those who need it most and he or she will certain get my vote.

the answer is easy. no! while everything else is going up, gas, inflation, housing, auto insurance, etc. wages have remained the same. many states have moved it up some, but by most standards, you can't survive on it. and any children would make it harder. even with a job that has a medical plan. you pay alot for it and the deductables. with taxes taken out if your not a state with state income tax. your going to bring home about 180.00 a week or 720.00 a month. rent is at least 450.00 or more, plus utlities, food. forget any savings of anykind. businesses complain as if it goes up they can't handle work comp and all their excuses. if the supplier goes up they pass it on to their customers as they always have. the turnover rate is very large as they want better pay. by increasing the pay rate, you get longer rates of employee's stayong. less turnover rates and cost effective as you don't have to train new people. good product with well payed people means more money for the business. look at the companies complaining about higher wages and then check the companies out. you'll find ceo pay off the charts. many with alot of cash assets or capital. its all about corporate greed. before i sold my business to retire, i payed my people minimun three times the minumun wage rate and still made alot of money. i shared with my people. many small businesses know if you want good people you have to pay to get them. they will pay twice or more the minimun rate to get them. you'll see that in the want ads everyday. the worst of them is the fast food chains. they pay their people barely over the rate and treat them like they are nothing and the turnover is alot. but the profits are high and the corporation franchising them makes a fortune. just remember that while congress slowly moves up the minimun wage they just increased theirs another 38 grand a year. run for office, thats where the real money is!!!!!

No. You're not asking that seriously are you? No one anywhere in the United States can provide for them self with just the basic necessities on that wage. Food, Clothing, Shelter?

Yes minimun wage is fine. Most minimum wage jobs are held by teens and folks wanting a bit of extra income. Teenagers do not need alot of money.
If you are working a second job for the extra income to pay the extra bills you have made for yourself that just means you are living beyond your means.YOU need to cut back on your living expenses..
It is possible to survive on minimum wage. I've done it. Most people expect too much.
You also have to consider if you raise the minimum wage the business' will have to charge more for their product and there ya are complaining, again, that the wages are too low.

Not really with todays cost of living you figure about $400-$500 for rent plus utilities then there is groceries and the lovely cost of gasoline at about $3 a gallon $5.15 doesnt go very far

melmars
You are not going to live off of this minimum wage and you shouldn't think you have to. This is to keep companies from not paying you pennies. These kind of jobs are for part timers and high school students, If you want to get better pay don't work at places that start you off at minimum!
Go to school get an education, even a high school education is better than nothing, make your resume to reflect what you know, not just your education when all you have is HS. Every place that pays higher scale at least wants HS.
