I saw on a tv show years ago that the dollar has no real value because America is so much in debt and because the gold standard doesn't exist or there's not enough gold to fully support the value of money in circulation? |

The US Dollar certainly has worth. IT will buy you $1.00 in goods anywhere in the world. It is a relatively stable unit of currency that is deemed of great value throughout the world. It isn't necessary to have money backed up with anything but other's perception of its value. In terms of world-wide recognition, the US Dollar is a very good form of currency. |

The US dollar is worthless in the sence it has no intrinsic value(value in use), only extrinsic value (value in exchange). US currency is based on the FIAT system, basically based on faith that people will accept it as a medium of exchange. National debt or negative current trade account will only effect exchange rates with other currencies, although those things will have little to no effect on inflation, to cause a decline in purchasing power. |

first off the US switched to a silver standard years ago...
second the Us STILL has outstanding money owed to us from WWII all the way up to and including today from countries all over the world...
third if the world would take care of its self, and the United Nations get a friggin military, instead of relying on us to police the world, and expect us to give handouts to every country that asks then we would have more money to take care of our own country... |

Money is worth what you can get for it... it does not have to make sense.
Go down to wall-mart - see if they are still taking American Money - if they are, no problem - if you ask if they will still be accepting American money tomorrow, they will take you away in a straight jacket and men in white coats and long face will ask you all kinds of questions. This is one way the government keeps the dollar strong.
But like i said, it does not have to make sense. |

There are several reasons to be concerned about the American dollar. Debt is one thing but something I think may be more important is the fact that US banks USED TO own most American debt but they sold the debt to foreign countries. |

This is really true. When they took away the gold/silver standard that covered our American Money, they replaced it with a company that makes our money. They print the money and we pay the interest each month on that money. We could have our own money and it not cost us as much as the interest does each month on the printed money by this company. We do not own this company, it is privately owned. |
