jessy | Is the ebay cost of shipping a ripped-off? |
I won a bidding on ebay for a cute small lamp from china that cost $0.99 and a nice 28x28'' painting from hongkong that cost $1 so i thought i would buy 2 for each of them cuz they were waayyy too cheap..
but when i looked at the shipping cost, before the lamp could be ship to my country in norway, i have to pay approximately $150-200 and it will come all the way from china....
and for the paintings will cost me $40-60 to be shipped from hongkong... are the sellers taking advantage of the shipping cost? or is it because the items are comming from asia? i just thought i won a jackpot over a one dollar cost of lamp and paitings but the cost of shipping took me by surprise!
i bid for two pieces on each items.. does it mean i will get a discount on shipping because of multiple purchases? and what is the $9 insurance for and who is going to pay for it?
im just new on ebay, i joined only this week. |

Buyer beware!!! People and companies sell cheap on eBay but make up the money in shipping and handling costs. If you purchase an item from a seller for $1.00, then eBay charges them a small fee of about .15. eBay does not charge a fee on shipping and handling.
The description of the item should have included the cost of the item, the shipping costs and any additional insurance. If not, then report them to eBay. If all this info was included then you are stuck. You are also stuck for the additional $9 in insurance if it states so in the description.
If you back out of the deal and don't pay for the item, expect a negative in your feedback.
If you really don't want the merchandise, then don't pay for it and suffer the negative for a while. Then purchase small items and pay right away. Become a great eBayer and the negative will eventually fade away. |

Whoa!!! $150-$200 for shipping! Heck NAW! When I buy things on e-bay, the price of shipping is my deciding factor. Some people have ridiculously high prices for shipping and there are people that will pay it. I am not one of those people! There are scam artists on e-bay so please be careful the next time you bid on something. |

Sellers charge so much on shipping is because they want to save money on the insertion fee. Just an FYI, international mailing is very expensive in Hong Kong by post office though. Next time make sure you know the shipping cost prior placing a bid because once your won, you're committed to purchase. |

Ebay does not determine the shipping price. That is determined by the seller and it could be anything he/she wants it to be. The shipping cost and insurance cost should always be determined before you make a bid on an item. Most U.S. sellers try to make an extra dollar or so on shipping but the overseas sellers definitely try to rip you off when it comes to shipping. I'd be wary of buying stuff from China/HK, you never know if you're going to get a piece of junk. Sending it back to the seller is going to cost you a pretty penny so you're stuck with something you weren't expecting. All you can do is give the seller negative feedback so nobody else gets ripped off by the same seller.
Insurance is paid by the buyer. That's you. It's optional. It covers the item in case it gets lost or is broken in transit. If it is, you can recover the cost of the item from the postal service or the shipping company. But if you're only paying $1 for the item, you'll only get $1 back. You won't get the cost of shipping back. Like I said before, if it's coming from overseas, it may all be a scam to get your money. If they never ship it to you and say it was "lost" in transit, they already have your money and it's up to you to follow up on it. Who knows if they really buy insurance on the item before they ship it. They may be taking you for another ride on the insurance money.
If I were you, I'd cancel the order (if you can) and stick to a local seller. When something looks too good to be true...it usually is. |

ha what ppl dont realize is the seller gets to make up the price of shipping. Thats why they can sell it for $1.00 cause they can up the shipping charge. I HAD a bf once that sold on E-Bay and he did this all the time. Scam Artist much. Id be aware of what you buy for that reason and if it doesnt say how much shipping is then email them and ask first. Good luck to ya |

Sorry to hear that you got stuck with all that shipping. And, yes, people can take advantage of you by overcharging on shipping. You must check everything out first, especially the shipping charges. I almost got caught that way when I first started out, too. Check with the post office first to see if these charges are in line; and if they aren't, let eBay know that you think these sellers are abusing the system. eBay may kick them out if the abuse is real bad. That won't help you, but it may keep someone else from getting burned. |

Sometimes a ebay seller might sell something very cheap. But make up the loss in the shipping price. |

you can try to see if they will retract your bid.......you might get a bad rating for this but they might work with you cause you are new
i ordered a ring that the shipping was 12$.......i was like 12 okay....well its gonna come in a sturdy box with plenty of bubble wrap and so on.......it was sent in a tiny little cardboard box and the post office stamps what the actual cost of shipping was
it said it was $2.80......WOW thats 9$ profit right there!
just be careful what you order and make sure you agree with all the terms on the page
RULE OF THUMB FOR eBAY
if its sounds too good to be true.........it probably is!!!!!

I buy and sell on ebay all the time. I always look at shipping when buying an item as most charge way to much. Now some do add a few dollars to cover the cost of driving to the post office, buying tape and peanuts and boxes which is not cheap. I sold an item the other day for 17 dollars and shipping at 15 dollars. The actual shipping cost me 17.59 which I paid so lost money on that and thats not including ebay and paypal fees. So out of the 17 I get about 12 due to this. Plus had to drive 18 miles to post office and wait 49 minutes in line to ship this. I lost big time when add gas for car and time. But thats rare as most people got it figured out. I am learning that shipping cost seem very high due to USPS and others cause of the fuel charges they are adding. I been buying Lego's for my daughter, most times I pay more in shipping than the pieces cost. So I try to buy mosr than one thing from a person to combine shipping. Good luck and becareful on ebay theres to many that charge way to much for shipping. You can check online to see what it should cost and give the seller a pass for a few dollars more to cover their time and supplies. |

ebay charges a percentage of the sale to the seller, but shipping is not part of this.
Some unscrupulous sellers will sell items very cheaply, and make up the difference in "shipping". This allows them to avoid fees from ebay, and also causes people to bid on items thinking they are buying them for much less, when in reality the shipping more than makes up for your savings.
Some sellers will allow you to combine items in order to save shipping. In this case, the "shipping" is in reality part of the sale price and it is highly unlikely they will allow you to do this.
Insurance is to guard against loss or damage when in transit. The buyer is usually expected to pay this if they want it. If you go through with this purchase, I would consider insurance as they can ship you broken items, claim it was damaged in shipping, and if only you had gotten insurance, they could help you, but sorry, it sucks to be you. |
