The real unemployment rate is 22%. It has been 20% or higher for over a year already.
The Clinton Administration changed the way the unemployment statistics were calculated back in 1993 so they could make themselves "look good" following Bush I Administration's recession. They put in a "fudge factor" called the "Birth-death adjustment" so that the numbers can be politically manipulated each month. Also, no current numbers can be compared with statistics from prior to 1993. The same thing was done with the Consumer Price Index to hide real inflation.
However, a great statistician has been taking the raw data & running the same statistical analyses used pre-Clinton so that statistics can be compared over time. Hence, 22% unemployment, the highest since the Depression of the 1930s.
NOTE that no unemployment statistics include new entrants to the labor force. They must have worked to be counted as employed/unemployed. Add new entrants to the labor (I only add new grads looking for work, not new immigrants, etc). And it comes out that over 31 million Americans are jobless and looking for work these days.
Also note that some 57% of workers who lose their jobs do NOT qualify for unemployment. They did not work long enough, used it all up in a prior bout of unemployment and did not yet requalify, or were paid as independent contractors, etc. So unemployment applications has become a highly deceptive way of understating layoffs, job losses. |
