Is this a normal action by an employer?
My boyfriend's company wrote him up today for excessive absenteeism...in February. Today is August 29th. Is this something that happens often, or is the management screwing him over? I'd like to know what you think.
Additional Details
OK, I should have explained this before: he was out on PTO in February, which he has every right to use, and he was also using that PTO because his father had just had a heart attack and he needed to take care of him, which his employers knew. Now, back to my original question...

There are a couple of possibilities.

They may have been short-staffed until now, and it's possible that they've only just now gotten around to doing an analysis of attendance for the year.

Another possibility is that management was discussing excessive absenteeism in a recent meeting, and they decided to do a "look back analysis" to get a feel for the scope of the problem.

In any case, your BF (and probably some others) got called on the carpet for their past behavior, and they've been put on notice that "da Boss" has his/her eye on them, so they'd better mind their Ps and Qs from now on.

At least they didn't outright FIRE him--they're giving him a chance to straighten up and fly right.

=====

P.S. If he's the ONLY ONE who got called on the carpet, then they're probably looking for excuses to fire him. Eventually they'll find something, no matter how "lame" their reason is. So it'd be a good idea for your BF to start putting out feelers to get a new job.

Also, if the "excessive" absences were due to PTO, and he'd cleared it with his boss and with personnel (just to let them know what he was doing and how long he'd expected to be gone), then there may be a problem with the system that they use for tracking who is absent, when, and why. When he got called on the carpet, personnel should have formally noted the reason for his "excessive" absenses, and that should have gone into his file.

They are always trying to purge lazy employees that they can not count on. It is their right since they are paying the wages. Often people with bad absenteeism records are also not very productive when they are at work so being absent is a handy (and provable) reason to can them.

No, it's not normal. Your boyfriend should check with his employee handbook or human resources to see what the guidelines are for absenteeism.
He should always ask for a copy of anything that goes into his file.
Good luck.

Natalie_legs
sounds like he pissed somone off so they went fishing for something to write him up for. they probably didnt have anything legetimate to wrtie him up for so they had to fish all the way back to feb.

SuzeY
They're setting the stage to dismiss him next time he screws up. He'd better be a model employee from now on, otherwise he'll be getting the heave-ho the next time he makes a mistake. If an employer has valid reasons for dismissal, and the employee has previously been written up for these reasons, the employer may not necessarily be on the hook for unemployment.

Your boyfriend had better clean up his act and stay clean or he's gone.

smile4u
The are probably trying to get the writeups in so they can fire him. Most companies want 3 writeups for their records before they will let someone go. If I were him I'd start looking for other employment or get on the ball and do a really good job from now on.

They could be auditing work hours every 6 months. Why was he absent? If the absenteeism was suspicious, they have the right to write him up. If he was honestly incapable to work, then he should be able to give them the reasons why he missed so much work. You and he can't get mad because his employer is looking after the company's interests.

It would have been nice to get all the info BEFORE we answer the question. In this case it was a family emergency, the employer should be made aware of that.

Most places I've worked will write you up if you exceed the amount of sick days that THEY determine for you. We get 6 days a year in our company and you need a doctors excuse to come back to work. Maybe your boy friend should go see a doctor nest time he is sick and present the proof to his boss. It may not get him off the hook but it may prevent him from getting fired and just suspended for three days. Tell him to check on the number of sick days he gets a year as well.
Have a great day!!!

Maybe it just came to HR's attention, or maybe they're building a case. He should tread lightly.

I think they are covering their tails for the future in case they dismiss him. I would suggest that he keeps his nose to the grindstone over the coming months and gives no cause for complaint.

redskinschicknc
Well maybe it is his six month evaluation.

missy
Maybe every August they do a performance review for every employer. How long has he worked there? Is this the only time he has been absent? Was his absent days okay-ed ahead of time? I just need a little more info.

first of all, why was he absent?

built4speed
If your boyfriend is being written up, he has probably been verbally warned already. If he likes this job he better take this seriously. They are not screwing him over, this is how most companies work. They won't keep anyone if they can't count on them to show up, no matter what any of us think there is always someone who will your take your place at a job. And are you sure it was only for February, he could be not going and not telling you, but I hope all goes well.

Take copies of the signed and approved PTO requests to his boss and inquire why he is being penalized for approved time off. If the company fails to have a good explaination, find a good lawyer.

If his leave due to his dad's health issues were not approved on paper earlier, the company may be in the right if no FMLA paper work has been filed.

allaboutme_75
oh yeah they are trying to run him off

he should get a copy of his absentee policy and then take it to the big man himself.
