Bobbo | Is this the real conspiracy? Read on... I'm expecting opions and insights? |
One of the oldest industries originating in the North American continent is the Tobacco Industry. Started in the 1600's, it has only recently come under fire in the past couple decades. The consequences levied against them from the multiple court battles have actually only been minimal. And the fines and payouts, most likely, barely noticed by their accounting department. And as much as they have been limited in where they can advertise, they haven't seen any major decline in use. Their forced advertising campaign against their own product, somehow seemed to boost sales to under age smokers instead of the opposite. All this media hype and all the money spent in courts, then all of a sudden, the entire subject just dropped off the media radar. The largest producers of this highly addictive substance is really not being regulated at all. Even after it was revealed that some chemicals were being added solely to increase addiction, they were not forced to stop this practice. Additional Details And really, think about it now.... Tobacco has been in comercial production since the early 1600s. An instant boom for Jamestown, Virginia in the colonization days, addicticting colonists as well as homeland Europe in a mere 20 years and going strong ever since. This industry has been more profitable, in an organized fasion, than any other industry. The auto industry does pretty good too, but their market penetration doesn't reach into poverty stricken third world countries. Philip Morris, the largest worldwide manufacturer, boasts sales in 160 countries worldwide. Most of the popular brand cigarretes are made by this company.
Do you really think the court system could possibly bankrupt this industry?
Their cash flow is too great, and their customer base is solidly addicted to their product. They have no worries about paying out a few billion in fines and reparations. They had that in their bank accounts at the turn of the LAST century, not 2000 but 1900. |

I don't know that I would call it a conspiracy but you said it yourself. It is one of the oldest industries in North America (A tradition so to speak). This also means it is one of the richest industries in North America and can pay out and buy out as it needs too.
The problem is it is an addiction and it is legal so it is available. You can not break an addiction if it sits there in front of you every day easy for the taking...
They could make it illegal but the money would just fight that and probably win too. But you can't make it illegal soley on the fact that it can be addictive or that it can harm you.
Would you make eggs illegal? They are loaded with cholesterol- Salt increases your blood pressure- alchohol is addictive and can harm you in excess- not illegal though there are controls on it..wait there are controls on cigarettes as well..
As far as addiction- many medications are addictive and aren't illegal though you must have a doctors script to take them (controlled) alcohol-addictive sucking your thumb-addictive (hopefully only for children)
I dont' think its a conspiracy as much as it is money talking - multi billion dollar companies can afford very good attorneys. |

and how does this fall under the category of conspiracy? its as simple as this, if you wanna smoke, go right on ahead. we know the hazards but that doesn't make one lick of a difference so everyone just needs to shut the f*ck up. we know what it does to our health. as for the kids part, smoking is a form of rebellion for many youths. and besides that, it just looks so f*ckin cool! |

It's not what you smoke it's how you vote. Republicans are in office now. Maybe it is them who are giving the tobacco companies a break. |

That's just wrong, we are curopting America, i mean the second we found out smoking was bad for you, we should have made it illigle- Look at us now!!! If someone said to you "Hey buddy, i've got this thing, that if you light it on fire and inhale it, it won't only distroy your lungs and shave 20 YEARS off your life, It also adds up to ALOt of money, and in the end we'll corrupt people as young as 11, so what'd say want one? There extermly addictive!" I mean that's just stupid! |

Simple, money. The government realized that if they pushed too hard they'd bankrupt the tobacco companies. Without the billions of dollars in cigarette taxes they (the US government) couldn't afford to pay for all the programs they "need" to fund. More than half of the price of the pack goes to taxes. And, no, I don't smoke. I just think it's a bum deal. |
|

thats it

Did you know that tobacco would have been banned a long time ago? But it wasn't because it was a major aspect in the American Economy. But what's even worse is that back then when
tobacco mattered in the economy ( when thry should've banned it), is now an even BIGGER part of the economy.Every year its increasing, if its not stopped now, itll be terribly worse in the future. Im suprised that yet no politician had the BALLS to say forget the money, lets try to end lung cancer! |
