Whether or not it is "legal" is a tricky question and one you should address with Human Resources. But if you boss is rude enough to ask, just answer for "personal reasons". People are entitled to personal days for various reasons, and if you choose to use a vacation day for personal reasons that is your business and none of your employer's business as long as you can give sufficient notice (By sufficient notice, I mean the day before and not calling in on the day that you want to take as a vacation day. In that case, some kind of explanation would be appropriate; you can say it is an emergency without going into a lot of sensitive detail.) And remember it is always wise to be polite and respectful if you want to maintain a good working relationship with your boss, regardless of his behaviour. This way, even if your boss acts like a fool, you will have handled the situation properly and with dignity. |

No tell him that you prefer to keep to yourself. He does not ned to know anything. If it's time for your vacation then just advice him that you're leaving. |

They can ask...and you can tell them whatever you want....
I have a good working relationship with my boss, so she always asks where I'm going or what I'm doing....I usually tell her....
When she takes days , I usually ask her also....... |

Vacation day- it is legal by federal law to ask unless your company only has vacation days and does not offer Sick days. Then it could get them in trouble because say you are ohhh lets see... going for a cancer biopsy (think I spelled that wrong), none of his business and could run afoul of Americans with Disabilities Act and even FMLA (if you decide to file for it after the fact, which you can do).
Sick day- it is generally illegal from them to ask about ongoing treatments.
I personally never bother asking, because does it really make a difference if one of my employees is going to a party or helping someone move? Not to me. If the day is available, I let them have it. I prefer not to know. Too many employees suffer from what I like to call TMI... they are people who give out Too Much Information. lol |

Might depend on were you live.
You must remember that vacation time is a benefit not a law so he might be-able to ask. Also is it short notice this may make a difference. |

Sounds good.
I even took a vacation day saying I needed to use it for a personal day. No questions asked. |

No, This is your private matter he doesn't have any right to ask you this question and if he does say I'm sorry that is explicit information. If he insists take it up with the person in which is in charge with the firm or department. |

He can ask, but I always say I'm going to the proctologist.
Tell him/ her you're going to the gyno, or the proctologist yourself...maybe they'll quit asking. ;)
Working for the man sucks, working in a cube sucks worse! |
