If my boss is staying on as well to get the tasks done then hey I would say yes.
I would question why is the 'issue' such a last minute thing.
It really depends in what job you do.
I get on with my boss we always tend to work as equals anyway. If the MD & therefore the bussiness needs this work done, then it is in my own interest to get it done. |

Yes sir.
What a great way to differentiate yourself. You don't have to be happy, but you will have that as an example of what a great worker you are when it's time for your review. If the company doesn't recognize your efforts, it's time to find a new job. |

"I have an important personal business I have to tend to, can it wait until tomorrow?" If he says no, and you are desperate for keeping your job all in good relations, then suck it up and work....if not, then say, "I can stay until (insert time) and then I must tend to (whatever it is)"
In other words negotiate with the bastard. |

Lack of planning on your part does NOT constitute a crisis on mine.
Don't make your problems my problems.
I'm going now, bye! |

I would state to the boss that I think it's an unreasonable request and that you will stay late for X number of hours (you decide how long), but that you have commitments beyond that. It kind of depends on the situation and the type of work that you do. If it's a one time thing, and it is urgent, then maybe, but never again. |

Anything for you boss! My boss is a nice guy and wouldn't do that on a Friday night unless it was super urgent and important. |

Sorry, I already have other plans. You should have gotten this to me sooner. And then I would clean off my desk for the weekend and clock out. |

Ask for comp time or overtime. Try to negotiate a fair exchange.
If it must be done then it must be done. I would not be happy but if it's not a regular thing and it's something that cannot wait then ok.
Where I am, the bosses like to say things are urgent but they aren't and they don't even have the right information so things change so often because they just rush through everything. I find it unprofessional and a waste of time and effort. Slow down and get the information correct or get the contact and let us contact the person for the right information. Why do something 3 to 4 times when it's possible to do it right the first time 90% of the time?
This shows your dedication and commitment to the company. For my last position at a different company because I trust the owners and my supervisor, I would be fine and understand. For this company, I would have to figure out if it's on the up and up. It's rare that it would happen here though for me anyway.
Ask questions. Ask for something to compensate. Fair is fair. |

I would ask the boss when does he/she need it completed by. Then I would work on it and hope that he/she remembers my effort when I need a favor in the future.
If such requests become more frequent, I would ask for a private talk with him/her and try to work something out. |

I would ask him if I could complete it at home, for my usual rate of pay. The answers would fork at this point;
"yes": I would take the work home, complete it in the pub, and get paid.
"no": I would direct him to the nearest corner shop to procure some vaseline, to assist in the introduction of said piece of work into his fundament.

If you do have an important plan for the evening, then apologise and explain for not being able to oblige. If it is genuine and he is not trying you on; will he be working late as well himself to coordinate with this "urgent" work? If he says leave it on my desk for him to look at first thing on Monday morning; then it means nothing can't be waited until Monday.
If you do not care much about the job, then decline the request outright and hope for the best in the company. Otherwise, work out an alternative time schedule for completing the work. If he wants it on his desk in the morning (Saturday); then still maintain you already have plan for the evening but would come in the next day for overtime work to help out. This way, you are not being unreasonable that you do not want to help. Provided this "urgent" work is genuine, of course. |

I would have loved to do it, its just that i have something personal to take care of right now, can I possibly do it from home in the night or tomorrow.
And it also depends on how comfortable and or desperate you're in your job. |

It all depends. When I had small children at home, I let my bosses know when I was hired that I was not available for overtime -- at the office. I was willing to take work home, but I needed to be at the house so that I would be available for the children. Later, once the children were grown, I would usually call my husband to let him know that I would be late. On occasion, when he and I had something planned, I would let the boss know that I was unable to stay late on that occasion because of previous plans but that I could, again, take the work home, or that I was willing to come in at another time, say, early Monday morning. If you are serious about your employment prospects, especially about some day getting a promotion, or about not being the first one laid off when that time comes around, you must be prepared to be flexible and accommodating. |

If it's not in your contract, then you don't have to do it. However, that's your choice, but if you do decide to do it, don't make a habit of it. There is such a thing as an implied term in an employment contract (or any other type of contract for that matter) which can use custom and practice as a variation of the terms and conditions of your normal contract. |
