I wouldn't trust it. Look up the company on the Better Business Bureau: http://www.bbb.org and also

It's probably a scam! Don't do it, especially if they're asking you to send money to them! If it's really bothering you, go into your local bank. A bank teller can definitely recognize if the check is legitimate.

CJ
DO NOT DO IT.

Michael N
It sounds like fraud, since they want you to pay a part of your winnings.

I've gotten all kinds of email notices about lottery winnings. I mark them spam and don't bother to read them.

Hi,

I would doubt very much whether it is genuine. However, if it is a genuine-looking cheque (check), try depositing it at your bank.

Do NOT send even a cent through the Western Union system until you have the money showing in your account. (i.e. fully cleared)

You will probably find that the letter wording is such that this will not be possible...now you know it is DEFINITELY a scam.

Let's face it, how many people get checks through the post (for any amount) without knowing what it is for? Not many, I'll warrant.

I suspect this letter/check belongs with all the 'I'm the bank manager of the Nigerian National Bank, etc. etc. who claim they have millions of dollars in their bank belonging to someone of your name and if you 'just agree to pay us 15%' they'll transfer it directly to your account.

Sound good? What happens is your account will be emptied. Be very very suspicious of this check. But, just in case, try depositing it!

Cheers and good luck (if it's genuine, then congratulations)

NO!!! Did you watch Oprah yesterday? it's a scam

Gunner
Here's the deal: you deposit the check, send them money, and eventually the check will bounce and the bank will collect from you. Old Nigerian scam. Don't do it.

Let me guess. You "won a lottery or sweepstakes" and the check is an advance to cover the taxes on your winnings. Or are they asking you for to financially help a deposed leader of an African nation?

I work at a bank. One hundred percent of the time this IS a scam! I recomend you take the check and letter to your bank and have them call the "paying bank" to verify the check is bogus. Then let your bank turn the check and letter over to their fraud department for follow up.
