jackattackbauerpower | Job ideas for an antisocial teenager? |
I'm 16, looking for my first job, and very antisocial. My people skills are horrible and I try to limit my interaction with people for the most part. My parents told me I need to get a part time job. They said I only need to work a few days after school and on the weekend to begin with because I am taking some difficult classes in school (3 AP classes) and usually get a lot of homework. I have absolutely no idea what kind of job I should try to get. I'm not sure what information would be helpful and relevant to know about me, but here are a couple random skills/interests I have (These are just included in an attempt to help. It is not necessary to suggest a job that is related to them):
I am willing to work hard, good with animals, interested in music, and skilled in writing.
I am not interested in being told to just deal with it and be more social, stop being so difficult, or that a social job will help me practice social skills. Those are not solutions for my situation.
If you have any helpful suggestions, tips, or ideas for what kind of job I could get, it would be immensely appreciated. Thank you. Additional Details Thanks to everyone who is responding and wishing me luck, there are many helpful suggestions so far. I didn't expect so many answers. |

Well it sounds really lame but so far (for antisocial woman) I have found cleaning jobs, such as a maid or personal house cleaner, to be something you can do alone and usually limit social contact. Sure you have a little but it's easy to smile and nod....
Also if you live in the country I found tractor work to be great, and EXTREMELY antisocial, such as running a swather or bailer although those jobs tend to be full time and usually you have very long hours.
If you live near a car dealership a details person is also a good job, good if you like sexy cars, too (some times you get to drive them!)
Here's some job that suck for antisocial people though (I tried em, too)
Fast food, unless you work in the back as a cook. Don't go for the front counter or drive through window it's pure agony.
Waitress. For obvious reasons. Again bus boy, dishwasher or cook are much better choices.
That's about all I have at the moment...Hope I helped!
Best of luck =)

about the only job you will ever have an an antisocial adullt is a minimum wage night janitor job. Is that what you are aiming for? In ANY job these days...you will be unltimately judged on your people skills. GUARANTEED....you think i am just typing this because i have nothing better to do??
Like the person said above...Virtually ALL jobs for teenagers are front line service jobs that involve dealing in a proper manner with the public. YOU BUILD character with these types of jobs, instead of going through life as a loser teenager who thinks they know anything about real life. |

A better option is to work from home on your computer - write articles, sell on eBay, make a website, take surveys. In some cases, you may have to set up an account in your parents or guardians name, and ask them to pay you, after they get the money for your work. More details are available at http://kj9.info |

First off, let me say you're going to have a very hard time going through life with "no social skills," no matter how many AP classes you're taking.
Most jobs that are available to 14-17 year olds are all service related, like bagging groceries or working a cash register. I can't think of a single one that could possibly use your skill in music or writing. And most positions at humane centers for animals are volunteered for. So I'd like to tell you what the perfect job is for you, but it doesn't exist. |

You could try for stocking at a store..since you like animals you could see if any pet stores need someone to stock or work in the "sick room" taking care of animals. As a stocker you may come into a few situations with people but if you make yourself unavailable they tend to leave you alone..just dont the boss see you avoiding customers! Honestly, I dont like to talk to people and I worked at a department store, I didnt talk to that many people except on busy days..I walked away with a new hatred for shoppers, they couldnt seem to understand clearly written signs for some reason. Anyways, you could try for a small local store or a music store. Im not good with that but since you're a teenager you could go to Snagajob.com and look on there for some jobs available in your area..good luck and I hope this helped! |

When I was 16 I worked in the back of a warehouse testing hard drives. I'm fairly anti-social as well but it gave me some good experiences with businesses. Look for a job where you'll be doing a lot of busywork - A secretary or... hardware tester haha. It'll be really boring, but its work, and you might be able to develop some social skills at the same time. |

I'm 14 but my dad has a restaurant and ive been working since like i was 7 but from that stuff that your interestedthere might be some jobs but you pprobablygotta be 18.
And sense your not much of a social person it may be kinda hard working but you can get any job basiclly well ones that hire ppl under 18. Uhm you can try working at like PetSmart as like a Cashier or just a stalker be someone who stalks the food and stuff.
But a few i can think of that ive tried 2 get but i couldnt cuz i dont have a work permit yet are like...PetSmart,Gamestop,ColdStone,Jamba... you know like small easy jobs.
but if ur city has a Local Shopping center or what we call a HUB like a section with variety at stores try googleing it and call stores and just ask if they are hiring thats what i did. |

My advice is to stick to the writing in which you can do your own research, writing, editing, etc. from home. Why not consider writing on animals and/or music since those are your other interests? Sure, my opinion is to develop your social skills because what if your book, newsletter, or other publications become a "hit," wouldn't you want to do signings, speaking and other methods of promotion??? That's your choice. You can make money whether you have people skills or not by finding and filling a need. It'll just be harder for you without establishing rapport and being known as an expert if you are not approachable. You may wish to consider solitary jobs like accounting, data entry, computer work, etc. in which you work for yourself and with yourself. |

I'd probably suggest working in an animal shelter or something. It can be quite rewarding and you'd mostly only be in contact with animals. You could also perhaps try a small record/music store which would probably require a bit more social interaction but probably a lot less compared to other retail jobs. I personally do some part time proofing reading from home which requires very little contact and is flexible so something like that might be good for you. I'm not sure how hard it'd be to find something like that though, I was luckily enough to have contacts through a friend.
You could also do something involved in stacking/stock taking in warehouses or something.
Good luck to you anyway. |
