My class is out of control and I need to find a way to SHUT THEM UP!?

I might end up putting duck tap on ther mouths or call 911!

It depends on if you're a student or a teacher. Today, I had 2 students sit in time out away from the other students who happened to be talking a lot. I made sure they understood why they were being placed there for their actions and made it clear to the class as well so they would learn not to follow the behavior of this student. Also, calling home helps for most severe students, as well as trash pick-up, or detention with you doing standards about talking in class. Why not have everyone do it if it's really everyone?
If you're a student, you can help the teacher by telling the class to be quiet and remind them that the faster thier quiet, the faster you guys finish whatever it is you're doing and are able to leave for recess, lunch, class period, etc. Good luck.

Maybe you should rearrange the seats. If that doesn't work write up the main trouble makers. If that doesn't work give out extra assignments. If that doesn't work then you're pretty much doomed for the next two months.

I once had a teacher that said, "IF you want to get the students' attention, whisper." She never spoke above a whisper and because we all really wanted to pass the class, we had to be quiet in order to hear what our lessons and homework were. Lectures were torture for me as I have 75% hearing loss in my right ear. I always sat in the front row in her class just to hear what she was saying. I passed with straight "A"s but only because she would sometimes give me assignments and lectures already written, to compensate for my hearing loss!

These are what ALWAYS worked for every class I have been in:
*get a whistle!!!
*or tell them that there will be no recess today to anyone who is not quiet when asked

*give everyone a timeout
*give out penalties to the entire class 100 times "I will not be unruly and loud" or something like that.

don't try to bribe with candybars...this will just show them that they have your permission to walk all over you a little bit more
Do the things I have suggested

There are several things I try to do to keep my class quiet.
1. I hand out tickets to attentive students. Students can be used to buy things from a treasure box, to go to the bathroom drink water (especially if we are just coming back from recess, otherwise I let them go "without" paying).
If a student is being disruptive they owe me tickets
2. I give table points when there is a table that is quiet and doing their work.
3. Use a big glass jar and marbles. When the class is attentive add marbles. Give them a prize when they have a full jar (popcorn party, popcycles, they get to eat in the classroom during lunch and watch a movie). You can always take away marbles too.
4. I use verbal praise around the problem. For example, if a student talks excessively I praise the quiet student sitting next to him or her. "I like the way ________ is listening attentively."
5. State your expectations before beginning the lesson/activity. Everyday before we come into the classroom I let my class know that I expect to sit down and take out their math journals. I say that I am looking for the group that can do this like second graders to get some table group points. A lot of the times just saying that before doing anything works.
6. If someone gives an answer without raising their hand or because they didn't wait their turn I tend to ignore the answer or mention that I heard a good answer but that person didn't raise their hand. Usually someone else will repeat their answer. (Makes them mad but praise the person that raised their hand).
7. Give them "The Look." A lot of the times that is all it takes
8. Walk next to the student that is creating the problem without stopping your lesson. Proximity helps too.
9. Make an example of a student. Send them out to another class for 15 minutes for talking too much. Make a big deal about how this person can't be part of the class because he or she can't follow the rules.
10. When I any of these just don't work take away recess time. Tell them that you will take away 2 or 3 minutes but they have to put their heads down. If someone talks the timer starts at zero again. I know this takes part of your time but its time well worth it. You can always just take a break in the middle of the lesson as well and tell the whoe class to put their head down for like a minute until they settle down. Before raising their head again, go over behavioral expectations.
11. I remembered one more. Sometimes when my loud voice is not enough to get through all their talking I begin whisper simple directions. For example, "If you can hear me wiggle your fingers...(this lets you know who is listening) then you keep going...If you can hear me put your hands on your head...If you can hear me give yourself a pat on your back...etc The kids around them that are not listening will wonder what they are doing and begin to listen to you. After a few directives you will have the whole class doing what you say and not only are they quiet but they are listening.

You are not following in the trend of every other teacher...recommend that they get tested for ADHD & then they can be doped out zombies on Adderall (sp?) & Ritalyn.

Dont resort to violence whatever you do....Good luck with that though

Candy bars to everybody at the end of the period, class, if they all kept quiet? but if anybody spoils it nobody gets them? used to work in my fifth grade class... Maybe it wouldn't work anymore.

You ask them to be quiet.
If they continue to talk you ask them one again to be quiet.
And again if they continue to talk you ask the one more time to be quiet.

And if all above doesn't work you look at them and say, well since you guys have so much energy today, you should have no problems getting this done, and give them tons of homework.

That should teach them, if it happens again... do the same thing, after a few times they will learn to shut up and asked too.

Well you can do what my teacher did. She made a jar and puts marbles in it and when one falls out of the top, we could get Pizza. Only when we were good would she give us marbles. Or halfway up, she would give us popcorn and coke!! It always worked.

just tell them to sut the FU** UP.

Leave that class and find another...Or are u a teacher? I suggest yelling at them and giving lectures.

Threaten to call the cops! They might respond to that and if they are still loud, dial a number so they think you did! Try callin ur home phone or something!

Guns shut people up.
Blare some Punjab music for about 30 minutes a class... or find some bluegrass, Maybe some disjointed Jazz piano... It kills... kids will shut up not to hear the music.
Maybe some metal too.

Seriously, You need to make them shut up with what you can get away with... you should play music.
